It is, unfortunately, not unusual for a med that has worked to stop working, so the doctor wanting to switch to the celexa (another SSRI) makes lots of sense.

> After brain surgery to correct a seizure disorder (successfully) my daughter experienced severe depression. The doctor put her on Paxil. After a year of good results, her took her off. The depression returned. She started Paxil again, but no effect. The doctor wants to try Celexa. Any thoughts from anyone? Thanks. jk

I really don't think I knew how badly depressed I was. Stick with the med if you can. I was told it would take about 2-3 weeks to take hold. I felt a little better the first week, but still slipped back about 2 out of 3 days. Now I have had 3 wonderful days in a row and am starting to enjoy doing things again. So far it's helping.

Celexa is it the answer?

My fiance and I are due to be married in a month, he has been depressed all of his life and tried several anti depressants. Before he and I started dating he found success with prozac except that it effected his sex drive to such a point that he didn't even think any sexual thoughts. This was fine for him until he met me. After we started dating, he stopped taking prozac because it was effecting our sex life (or lack there of). A few weeks passed and he was able to have an erection and another week after that he could ejaculate. Well, it has been 10 months since he has been off anti depressants and he is starting to slip back into depression. We are searching for an anti depressant that will do its job but not erase his sex drive. Is celexa the answer?

Obviously the people who write here are ones who have had problems with the drugs. My experience is that Celexa made me instantaniously non-sexual. I have found that whatever side effects I had with prozac, they were worse with Celexa-the tiredness most particularly. But when I took Prozac ten years ago I wasn't very functional with regard to sex any way. One side effect I had with Celexa, which I did not have with Prozac, was compulsive over-eating and quick weight gain. A number of people here have reported the same effects. But it is highly individual and it is not hard to get off Celexa if the side effects are too negative. Plus it might give a kick out of the depression. Celexa is marketed as the SSRI with the least side effects--though obviously not for the people reporting here. So I woould try it and wait out at least two weks and see how it goes.

Celexa-Can't Get Back to Where I Was!

I have had depression since 1/99. 3/99 I started taking Celexa and by 4/15 I was feeling great.
No worries with great future outlook. Having never taken an antidepressant before, and since I was feeling so good,I slowly began to
wain off the Celexa (I know this was stupid!) When I got to 10mg per day, the depression began to
return. Now I'm trying to get back. I slowly went from 10,20 to 40 mg over three weeks, but have now
been on 40mg for a month and am still depressed although it does seem to be getting better.
My Doc. says you always can get back where you were once something has worked well.

Anybody have any experience like this?

Not me, but I have several friends for whom this has happened for a number of anti-depressants. THey felt so good, it has been effective for a long time. THey decide they don't need it any more. They go off. The symptoms come back. They go back on and the anti-depressant doesn work any more. One of my friend's doctor says this is not uncommon. My friend did this three times over several years with three different anti-depressants. The doctor warned her they were going to run out of different anti-depressants if she did this again. The only solution was to start her on a different one. I fully understand not wanting to feel like one has to take a pill for mental issues for the rest of one's life. But for many people that is true. And really that is not so bad. I am on Hormone replacement therapy and I have to take an antiinflammatory that I will have to take the rest of my life. I am on klonopin which I cannot get off of even thoough it is not effective for me anymore (I get very dark and despairful with even the minutest drop in dosage, something I never even felt before I got on it.) Given that you've lost the Celexa effect and you are lucky not to have the negativ side-effects, I would try one of the earlier SSRI's like Zoloft or Prozac. If you have no negative side-effects (watch out for feeling very tired and having to sleep a lot and losing motivation--these are side effects some people --including myself--have had on all the SSRI's). If it goes well--stay on it!!! Don't risk going off and then not having any benefit when the symptoms return when you go back. Be grateful you are one of the lucky ones. THere is not shame in taking an antidepressant the rest of your life. I just heard a broadcast of the conference on Mental health with Tipper Gore and the Clintons. On it was Mike Wallace of "60 minutes." He told his story with antidepressants. And his efforts to try to get off it only to have to get back on. He's says he has finally accepted that he has to be on it the rest of his life. He also says that he has never felt as well and happy and content with his life ever before and he is extremely grateful for the existance of anti-depressants. He has joind the compaign on mental health awareness because he feels that he can be an excellant role model for it. So try a new one, if it works stay on it and count your blessings. I would give anything to find one I can stay on the rest of my life. But in addition to the wonderful benefits, I have had horrible side effects that were intolerable. Be grateful.

I agree with Melissa. I took Prozac for years at varying dosages to treat my depression. I finally achieved a very long time depression free period and decided to see what would happen if I went off Prozac altogether(partially because I wanted to reawaken my sexual side of life). I did okay for four or five months but the depression returned and I have never achieved that level of relief again. In fact, Prozac never relieved the
depression like it had earlier. Ive been searching and trying since. Should I ever be depression free with medication help, I doubt I'd ever try to mess with success. It's sort of depressing to think I blew the only chance I had at a socalled "normal" life albeit dependent on Prozac. Stay ont the medication if it works. Good luck!

I was wondering if I could ask you a question.
Have you started to feel better again after being on celexa again for a while? I guess the reason I was asking is that I am thinking about trying to wean off of it because I absolutely hate the side effects and maybe try St. John's wort. But, if it will be really hard to stablize myself again if I run into problems, maybe I should just live with the side effects. Anyway, I was just wondering about your experience if thats ok. Thank you very much. : )

Good News! The Celexa has now kicked back in!
I no longer have sad feelings in the morning.
This took about 5 weeks from when I weaned off.

As everybody suggested to me, I would not go
down on the Celexa without checking with Doc!

On this second round, I was starting to become
concerned with morning headaches but simply
took my 40mg at 9PM instead of 10 PM and now
I do not awaken with headache!

The first thing I tried in January when the
depression first started was St. John's Wort.
I was on it for two months and it did not seem
to help at all! There are a lot of books supporting
SJW, but I never heard of anyone who has really
been helped by it in the long run!

Very Best of Luck
I'll E-mail you if seek additional info

When I was on Celexa, the headaches started to diminiish after a while. I did try St. John's Wort a year and a half earlier and had wonderful results. (My depression is very mild--it is more anxiety I deal with.) But it was only effective for about 3 mos. I didn't know this and kept taking it for another 8 thinking that it was circumstance that was leading to an incteased depression and despair. (THere were circumstances to justify that but looking back I over reacted in exactly the way an anti-depressant is supposed to prevent.) I then learned that ther are studies that have been coming out that demonstrate that St Johns WOrt is only effective for mild cases of depressiona dn only lasts about 3 mos. It was the power of that impact onme that led me to decide to try the pharmaceutical route. But as I have posted in other notes, though Celexa had very positive psychological benefits, the side-effects on me were intolerable: sex drive killed off immediately (which I could have lived with for a while), compulsive eating disordered triggered horribly (gained 10 pounds in 6 weeks and it was getting worse) and deep in m bones tiredness that caused me to sleep and take naps in increasing amounts until I was sleeping 14-16 hours day, loss of motivation which is deadly in my profession (not anxious, who cares? why worry? put it off til tommorrow.) But the psychological benefits were enormous: my anxiety disappeared, whatever depressionI had disappeared, my tendancy to take other people's stuff personally disappeared and in fact enabled me to manage difficult people or people in difficult moods very effectively) optimism became extremely strong, sense of self-worth, empowerment and so forth. It was great. I held on to the Celexa as lng as could but then I had to stop. Of course everything reversed rather quickly both the positive and negative. Tiny doses didn't help. So now I am relying on my therapy (which I must say I am very fortunate to have be highly effective), I have started using a light box, even in the summer, and I religiously workout cardio vascularly 45 minutes 5 times a week. (I also do weight training twicw a week.) I also meditate with meditation books every morning (I am in 12 step programs and have been for 13 years). I find that if I let any of those drop for more than three days I deteriorate mentally quite quickly, whether it is the exercise (especially that) the light box, or the meditation. I also go to a minium of 2 12 step meetings a week. THis takes a lot of organiztion and it took me years to build a rooutine so I could get all this done efficiently but it seems to work. It is not as good as the positive benefits of Celexa but I think in the long rum I will get there. And the good news is--no bad side effects and my sex drive is extremely healthy and gets better all the time. (smiles). So the best to everyone. Cheers for feeling well and happy in life!!!

Hi Kelly, I discontinued Celexa 2 weeks ago after about 3 months of unsuccessful treatment. For the last 2 weeks I have experienced extreme fatigue and some dizziness. Today is the first day that I feel I have my energy back. So it may take 2 weeks or so for your system to readjust. Hope this helps. Peter

I am having similar side effects with Celexa that I've had with other SSRI's (Prozac, Paxil): enormous sleepiness, even when I take the 20mg at night--I'm up to about 10-11 hrs a day now. Also, at first, for a few days, I felt energetic and positive; now I'm depressed. I was on 40mg of Welbutrin for some months, which seemed to work somewhat better than SSRIs, but I was going down again, so now I'm on this cocktail of 20mg Welbutrin, 20mg Celexa, and it just ain't working. Maybe drop the Celexa, try 60 mg Welbutrin? Anyone else in this kind of trap? It was a great relief to read about others being fatigued by SSRIs; no one I know has had this experience. Thanks for helping.

Hi Bobbe; Yes, I have experienced exactly the same problem with all the SSRI's; Prozac worked for a while and then petered out and just caused fatigue. I have tried Paxil, Zoloft and Celexa; all caused fatigue. Celexa caused extreme sleepiness with no therapeutic effects. I added Zyprexa which seemed to help to some degree but not really enough to justify the price. Remeron worked briefly and then stopped; it just caused extreme sleepiness and weight gain. I tried augmenting all these anti-depressants with Ritalin and Cylert but this was of minimum use. I am now just taking dexedrine (10-20 day) which so far helps but I have only been on this for a couple of days and I am waiting for the other shoe to drop. So you are not alone in your struggles with these meds and they are not everything that they are advertised to be for everyone. I have also tried Naltrexone which did not work either. Anyway I hope your luck improves; I wish I could give you some positive suggestions but just to say keep at it, things will change. Peter

Hi Bobbe!
I am not sure you are following the right dosage of Wellbutrin - have you checked with your doctor??? The usual initial dose is 75 mg, to titrate in, with 150 mg being the therapeutic dose, up to 300 if 150 doesn't work. I am taking 150 mg. of Wellbutrin-SR, the sustained-release version, and 20 mg. of Celexa, both of them in the morning. I have felt no sleepiness at all, in fact, this past weekend I wound up foregoing my usual afternoon
nap, because I didn't feel sleepy. I have had a bit of insomnia at night, trouble falling asleep, but it hasn't made me feel sleepier during the day.Even when I need an extra hour to fall asleep, I have actually been waking up a few minutes AHEAD of my alarm clock most mornings for the past week - unheard of in all my previous experience. Dear Anyone Who Has Any Experience,

I have been prescribed Celexa two days ago, and I happen to be having severe migraines (yes - plural) these past two days. I'm wondering: my shrink did not mention this as a potential side effect. Can anyone substantiate, with references to a medical site for Celexa, like, you know, with "Most Common Side Effects" kind of stuff - whether migraines is a potential major or minor side effect of Celexa. Because if it is, I'll look forward to chucking them over my balcony. Like many of you, I've been on and off these kinds of pills for years, and, much to my chegrin, I'm still not the big Hollywood star I dreamed I'd be when I was 16. Not to mention the fact that one's work ethic (at least, mine) seems to suffer with all these "sleepy" meds (leading to crappier jobs and greater depression). So - that's my "thing". Please reply ASAP. Thank you. Dar.

Dar,
I've read that headaches seem to be a common side-effect of Celexa--I'm not sure if that's anecdotal or if I've actually read this in a study (I don't know if that matters, if you're the one having headaches!)
I don't know what other meds you've been on, but if you've had problems with sedation, there are other meds available that are more activating (i.e. Wellbutrin) and that might be more helpful...
You might try Ivan Goldberg's Depression Central site for links to more detailed info on specific drugs (there's a link to *that* on the main page of this site). Good luck!

Thank you. Dar.

See my two posts on this thread about my experience with Celexa. I had headaches for a while but they started to diminish with in a week. I think that is a not uncommon side effect.

I had headaches when I took 40 mg all at once. Once I split the dose, taking 20 mg in the morning and 20 mg at night, the headaches went away. This was the only way I could tolerate Celexa in the beginning.

Now I'm taking 10 mg in the morning along with Wellbutrin 150 mg and 100mg Neurontin. In the afternoon I take 75 mg Wellbutrin and 100 mg Neurontin. At night i take 200 mg Neurontin and 20 mg Celexa.

The headaches have not returned once I split the dose. I did try taking 40 mg at night and I got another headache so I assumed that the dose was causing the headaches, not the drug itself. Initially i tolerated 20 mg without headaches.
