depression

My parents put me on Prozac and won't let off of it until I move out of their house. I've tried to stop taking it, but the depression always comes back. My parents won't let me see a therapist because they think he or she will mess with my mind. I want to try therapy because I hate being dependant on medication. What should I do?

It sounds like moving out is the first step, if you are old enough to live on your own. This way you could take charge of your situation instead of being forced to do it someone else's way. Initially, medication is used to lift the fog so that psychotherapy is possible, because in depressed state you cannot be receptive, think, make decisions, etc. So don't look at it as being dependent on medication just yet.

What does the doctor that prescribed the Prozac think about your parents forcing you on the drug and not allowing therapy? S/he might be able to help you educate your parents on depression and treatment options.

This sounds like a difficult situation, please keep us informed.

If your parents want you to handle your disease, Therapy can be a very important part of it. Their concern over the doctors messing with your mind is probably due to lack of knowledge. Often in therapy issues are explored such as family, childhood, moral and ethical subjects, and just personal feelings. I would suggest trying it and maybe bringing your parents along to join, it might be helpful for them!
