For Wayne R - Naltrexone

You've mentioned Naltrexone in your recent postings - I'm specifically curious about your statement that it can relieve SSRI apathy in some patients.
In your experience, does it have any affect on SSRI weight gain? I know very little about this drug except that it's used in the treatment of substance abuse.

Melinda, I have never seen any postings by Drs or others regarding Naltrexone and weight loss. I have lost weight since I have been on Naltrexone but I attribute it to the complete lifting of my depression and the resulting increase in my energy, activity and so on. Best regards... Wayne

Melinda,
In general, naltrexone seems to curb appetite in most people and to especially cut down on "addictive" or compulsive eating. I'm not sure how it would effect SSRI-induced weight gain per se, but it's pretty unlikely to make someone hungrier! While it's officially approved for opiate and alcohol abuse, its off-label use (aside from antidepressant augmentation) seems to be extending to various other "impulse disorders" as well: things like bulimia, compulsive gambling, repetitive self-injury, and so forth. Hope this helps.
Best,
JD
