serzone and rage?

Posted by ruth on June 3, 1999, at 8:52:24

Has anyone that's taken Serzone felt extremely angry
and irritable on it? I just started it and feel like
I am enraged--Not sure if it's me or the drug.

Hi Ruth,
Starting a new antidepressant can turn up just about anything, though Serzone isn't particularly known for anger & rage. On the other hand, one of the metabolites of Serzone is a substance called MCPP which, while normally produced in small amounts, is at least theoretically capable of causing such feelings. I've heard of it being a problem with people who combine Serzone with Prozac, because the Prozac causes extra MCPP to build up in your bloodstream. Hard to say though if this has anything to do with your reaction on Serwone alone though...

I suppose the general rule is to give every new med a chance to prove itself, but also to be sensible about discontinuing something that's making you feel worse. Let your doctor know if Serzone's in this category, since there's lots else out there...

Good luck,
JD

It's the Serzone, Ruth - trust me! I spent a brief, disastrous four weeks taking Serzone and during that time, I found myself actually telling people I worked with what I *really* thought of them (something I would never do normally)! It wasn't a pretty sight!

After I discontinued Serzone, I realized it had been the cause of my outbursts; and I have since read somewhere that one of the side effects of Serzone can, in fact, be hostility.

Maybe it's a side effect that will disappear in time, but I wouldn't take Serzone again for a Million Dollars.

Judy

Ruth-
Yes, I too have experienced this phenomenon. I
just added Serzone to a 2-drug combo I'm on for
recurrent unipolar depression and with 6 to 8
weeks, I noticed a slightly more irritable and
intolerant reaction to things. I thought it was
just my depression worsening. But into the 3rd
month, I became chronically angry, hostile, and
downright vicious to others and to myself. When I
tapered off Serzone, I started recovering what I
had lost, so to speak. As one of the other
respondents suggested, its probably a particular
Sz metabolite that simply wasn't for your (or my)
neurochemistry. But, it's all trial and error. I'm
sure Serzone is a fine drug for some folks; I'm
going to have to try another pro-serotonin med.

Best wishes to you. JohnB.

As you all probably know, it's very scarey to start
a new antidepressant, especially when it brings
out the emotions I'm most frightened of (rage and
anger!). I really want it to level off, b/c I
want this drug to work--there are things I really
like about it--especially that it dosen't interfere
at all with sex or sleep like virtually every
other AD has for me. Also I don't feel the numbness
or apathy of the SSRI's. But if the anger and
hostility dosen't fade some, I know I'll have to
go off, or I probably won't have any friends left
after biting their heads off so often.
It REALLY helps to have this feedback b/c it makes
me feel less crazy :-) Thanks for taking the time.

I've written below. Myself and a friend had similar reactions on drink with Prozac and Xanax (one drug each). Took me a while to figure it out.
