decided to go off celexa

Posted by dina on May 21, 1999, at 14:57:38

i have decided to go off celexa. i just wasn't feeling
right. the side effects were frustrating. i stopped cold
turkey a few days ago and i know that i will probably
have some withdrawal effects. any info on withdrawal
from celexa would be helpful. i think that i will
probably have to go on another anti-depressant, from
past experience. any thoughts on this? (i have been on
prozac, zoloft, serzone, wellbutrin and luvox) my pdoc
has stopped practicing, and i am only seeing a therapist
right now. thanks for listening. dina

Hi Dina,

I have also chosen to go off Celexa, cold turkey
because the side-effects were more than I could stand.
I stopped taking it approximately two weeks ago.

One side-effect of going off this drug that I have
noticed is that I am not as tolerant as I used to
be. Any additional side effect that I have noticed
is that I seem to get sick to my stomach and dizzy
alot.

On the up side.. I once again have an interest in sex,
which was completely gone before and my memory seems
to be progessively improving along with my productivity.

It does get very frustrating at times to just "not feel
like yourself" but the improvements I have seen have
made it worth it!!

Good luck!!!!!

Jessi

The only major side effect of Celexa that I had was the sexual side effect,
which my husband did not like. I decided to go off of it for that reason,
and my doc didn't have a reason for me not to go cold turkey.

The withdrawal effects I have noticed are failure to sleep at night, and a
lightheadedness or faint dizzyness.

Dina, I hope you keep us updated as to your progress going off Celexa. I have lowered my dose from 20 to 10 mgs. with the possible idea of going off eventually. I want to do it slowly and carefully monitor myself. I am so sick and tired of the side affects of AD medication!! I have tried them all and for me, as time goes on, instead of the side affects getting less, they actually get worse. Anyway, I will be looking for your posts hoping to find them.

decided to go off celexa/cindy

cindy- i totally understand your frustration with
ad's. i could go into this whole tirade about the
good and the bad about ads but everyone who's tried
them already knows. so anyway, i've been off celexa
for about 2-3 weeks, and i think that i am having
some withdrawal symptoms, still. (i think i had
withdrawal symptoms--on zoloft--for about a month)
i have a little dizziness, i have headaches almost
daily, i have pain, just sort of general pain, and
muscle weakness. i am somewhat irritable, and sometimes
i feel as if i'll cry any second. the weirdest thing
right now that i am experiencing is this complete
inability to handle heat. when i exercise, i sweat
profusely and get almost sick to my stomach. (i am
in pretty good shape, athletic and stuff) but, i
started therapy recently and i think that it is
helping me stay balanced. good stuff. anyway, i've
kinda started to ramble.
good luck and stay safe.

Hi Dina, I too am experiencing some new side affects from the lower dose...horrible headaches the first 2-3 days, and now muscle aches in neck and arms. When I was on Zoloft, my muscles in my neck and arms hurt so badly, it got to the point where I could not turn my neck. That went away after I stopped Zoloft. When I increased my dose of Celexa from 20 to 30 mgs., I immediately suffered severe constipation with pain involved. Nothing helped until I lowered the dose. Anyway, it is a struggle. Already, with the lowered dose, I have lost that bloated feeling I always have on AD's. Time will tell. Thanks for the post.

well, so far so good. when i went off celexa, i started taking 5-htp to lessen the withdrawal. it seemed to work. i am still taking it, as well as tyrosine, and i think that i am doing well. i am also seeing a good therapist and i think it is helping too.

good luck all.

Hi,
To all who quitting Celexa or other AD's,
you can do it if you want to. Alternatives
like 5HTP, St. John's, SAMe, Homocysteine Factors (cheap source of SAMe), aminos (DLPA, tyrosine, etc.) DO help. So do therapies,
incl. Acupuncture, EMDR, EFT, TAT.

I quit Celexa about 2 months ago, and have
continued to feel better and better especially with use of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques
(see www.emofree.com). This can be self-applied,
or see the directory of practitioners on the site.
Many of them also will work very effectively over
the phone.

I also feel that I learned and changed alot, as a result of getting so badly depressed, resorting to meds. for the first time in my 50 years, and working through it (Started Effexor mid-Jan., switched to Celexa in early Feb. and stopped mid-April.) I hated the apathy I felt and felt like it was time to quit.

Now I feel like I'm the best I've ever been, just
3 months after the "pits".

Good luck to you all.

being off/jim

jim-

i am glad to see your post. i agree with you that
alternative therapies work, 5-htp is working for
me, and i have friends that are doing well on st.
john's wort. one therapy that i am interested in
is acupuncture, but i haven't been able to find
much information on it, regarding depression.
would you have any ideas on where i could find
some info on acupuncture and the treatment of
depression?

I am still on the 10 mgs. of celexa and doing fine except for the constant muscle aches. I am considering now decreasing to 5 mgs. What is 5-htp? I have seen it mentioned frequently but have not a clue as to what it is. I want so badly to be medication free because I suffer the side affects. Have tried almost every AD and same thing, terrible side affects.

celexa/5-htp

In reply to Re: being off/jim, posted by Cindy on June 15, 1999, at 7:47:14

cindy-
(i hope i am explaining this correctly) 5-htp is
similar to tryptophan, an amino acid that is a
precursor to serotonin, but is one step closer.

here is a website with a little more info on 5-htp.
(it also touts a book about 5-htp, sorry about that,
but the info regarding 5-htp is good.)

http://www.doctormurray.com/B5htpFAQ.htm

go down slowly with the celexa (i HATE the
withdrawal effects too)

take care

Much thanks Dina...I will check out the site. I am now down to 5mgs. Celexa and will stay on that for a few weeks before discontinuing if all goes well. Not sure I can break the 5mgs. in half and get anymore but dust. :)) So far, ok. I have a very long hisory of depression so naturally I am leary but I will go slowly.

> Thanks Dina! I too am off Celexa for the same reasons. I was deeply disappointed with Celexa after having so much hope. I've had it with the SSRI's and their side affects. I'm 30 lbs. heavier and obsess about that all the time. Celexa was my 4th med and I decided to go with the St. John's Wort. I've only been on it for 2 days so far and haven't noticed much. I was so relieved to when I read your post because I've had it with feeling goofy and artificial and also being fat and having no sex life with my husband. Thanks again and good luck to you, Kel
