Serzone Psychotics!!!!!

Posted by Amanda on February 7, 1999, at 18:24:08

Hello everyone, i hope all's well. This weekend i had a horrible experiance with Serzone. My doctor and I are trying newer, more effective meds for my panic disorder, which I was diagnosed with about 5-6 years ago. Since then I've been taking a combination of nortriptyline & klonopin. I take 2 mg of klonopin a day, and 75mg-100mg of nortriptyline. The nortriptyline made me tired and less active with absolutely every aspect of my life. Because of that, my doctor and I have been trying new antidepressants to replace the nortriptyline. I first tried Effexor----AHHHHHH!!! Needless to say, that particular medication was not for me. It made me feel like I was on acid and having a panic attack all the while. So, I went back to nortriptyline, until just about a week ago. My doctor perscrbed serzone for me, and up until this weekend the only side effect was insomnia, which didn't really bother me at the time because not being able to sleep was nothing like the horrendous experiance I had with other meds. Anyway, out of nowhere this weekend the Serzone made me feel like I was on acid and having multitudes of panic attacks. I'm getting so frustrated with all of this. I just want to feel "normal" again. I know I'll probably never be off medication for the rest of my life, but that's alright, I can accept that. My big problem is that I need an antidepressent that combats both panic disorder and depression. With this disorder my life has become so limited. I guess what I'd like to know is---has anyone ever had the same side effects i had with Effexor or Serzone? Also, if so, have you found anything that works. I realize everyone is different, but what I'd really like to hear is that someone with problems similiar to mine has found success. God, I hope so. Even if things aren't working out for me, I'd love to hear that SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE, has been like me, but has finally found success. Good luck to all of you, and thank you for your time. It means a lot to me.

Hi Amanda!! To make a very long story short I went the Effexor/Serzone route as well over the past two years. With Effexor I physically shook so hard I could not hold a pen, lost memories, ran into mailboxes with my car, etc, which of course my doc at the time said was impossible. After trying many other ADs we settled on Serzone --which led to the excruciatingly painful "psychotic" attacks of mania/panic/seriously f**cked thinking patterns -- things I had never felt or experienced before. I wish I could say that yes I have found something that works. Well, Serzone scared me into a new doc's office six months ago, and she has been weaning me off of the dozens of medications I was taking to offset the side effects of Effexor and Serzone. She doesn't want to try any new ADs or any other med for that fact until she establish a "baseline." Meanwhile, with a healthy stock of klonopin for anxiety attacks, I've been weathering through the bouts of depression. I have an incredibly difficult time sleeping, but encouragingly, I am making it without ADs for now (with strict monitoring from my dr. and a very stringent plan should I stop eating, start crying ALL the time, or even begin to become suicidal). I also expect I will need maintenance meds of some sort all my life. I'm not sure this is helpful. All I know is I've been there, and I'm still herre, and I'm not giving up!! Good luck!! -shelley

I was prescribed luvox for my panic attacks and my ocd. It has given me my life back. I'm not saying it would work for you but serzone did not work for me either. Hope this helps....

I was Rx'ed Serzone about two years ago. I could
not sleep, had night terrors, and became even more
depressed. My doc told me, in essence, "you are
crazy. The drug does'nt do that".. Well, we came to an understanding and Paxil was prescrbed. That
stopped helping. I am now seeing a Psychiatrist and a counselor and on Effexor. I feel like I am in a sauna 24hrs. a day and am thinking it's the
effexor. Anyone else have this problem?
This is my first posting on the net, so forgive me
if I am long winded!

I am plagued with anxiety, depression and insomnia. After trying many meds, including triavil, prozac, zoloft, remeron, paxil, on and on, we tried serzone. I have been very suseptible to side effects on all meds tried. I took one 50mg Serzone last night and I freaked out - my heart was racing, my chest was burning, my mind was racing. I wound up having to take two mg of Atavan just to calm down. I hate this medication treadmill and I'm spending the rest of this week considering going against my md's advice and just going off all meds completely. I am thinking about trying alternative medicince, like acupuncture, Chinese herbs, etc. Anyone have any experience with this stuff?

Pat, I'm trying it - no ADs since I quit Serzone back in September. I'm alive, exhausted, but okay. I have a new excellent doctor who agrees with this decision and is watching me closely. I do take 1 mg klonopin every day and something for pain, as I have fibromyalgia as well. Tell your doctor before you make any decisions or see if you can find one who'll support your choices!! -having been there, Shell

Amanda, I can really relate to your story. What I have found that finally worked for me is The Klonopin, AND 50mg of ANAFRANIL taken at night. The combination of the two works WONDORS! NO panic whatsoever. You DOC will say that Anafranil is an "OLD" antidepressant prescribed for OCD and depression. Tell him/her that you want to try the combo for a month... I think it will help you

Good luck

I have just recently been prescribed Luvox. How long did it take before you began to notice any effect? Was on Prozac, Xanax, &Trazodone before being switched to Celexa & Trazodone. The Prozac and Celexa aggrevated the OCD.

Thanks for the reply. Serzone was a nightmare to me, and it started almost immediatly. Within the first 24 hours at least. It was like low-grade acid. I know this because when I was a kid I did LSD sometimes. Not something I'd recomend doing to anyone. I don't care what anyone says, that shit is just FN stupid and dangerous. Alot of kids are still doing it and loving it. All I gotta say is think before you do that shit. Also, my Dr. told me Serzone, Prozac, Zoloft, Paixil, and all their little friends affect the same part of the brain that LSD affects. So, all those drugs and the rest of them in that family drives me up the wall!!! I'm doing 1mg of Klonopin in the morning and at night, along with 50mg of Pamalor at night. It works for me. Good luck to all you guys with Panic Disorder. If you find that the anti depressants your Dr. prescribed you is driving you crazy, try mentioning trying a drug from the TRICYCLINE family. Some Dr.s will say they're old drugs, and they'll try to put you on something "newer and better". Just reply with a, Yeah-yeah, thanks for the update, but let's try a TRICYCLINE.

I think that's just a typo, but it is actually tricyclic, not tricycline. The tricyclics are older antidepressants, of which Pamelor is one of about a dozen in that family. While SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, etc) affect just serotonin, the tricyclics affect a bunch of different things. They do affect serotonin as well, same as LSD, but not in such a concentrated exclusive way that SSRIs do. I agree, if SSRIs cause trouble, the TCAs (tricyclics) were quite effective in their day, and are only less popular today because they do generally have more side effects. They were and still are great medicines.

I know the even newer antidepressants effect more than serotonin.
Tricyclics still have their place in treating depression. The constipation and morning sleepiness seemed to be the greatest side effects.
