Celexa vx. paxil and helping sleep

Posted by Dona on January 10, 1999, at 15:02:25

I was on prozac for 7 years but started feeling shakes
and more anxiety-now trying celexa, but not sure if it is
helping depression--plus I never sleep well and have
taken ambien in the past--only drug that helps me
to sleep--any thoughts as to whether celexa or paxil
are better to help normalize sleep? I cannot keep
taking ambien

When I took Paxil(40mg) I was restless and did not sleep well. On Celexa(40mg) I slept about 9 hours a day and was still tired. I you want sedation I would go with Celexa. I am now on Effexor(225mg) and having trouble sleeping even when I take 15mg Ambien. Good Luck, Donna

I had just the opposite results! (People seem to say that a lot around here...) Paxil, Zoloft & Effexor all made me sleepy (Efexor being the most manageable one.) Now I'm on Celexa and I'm wide awake.

I am taking Celexa and find that it causes insomnia. I take Trazadone at night for sleep and it really helps.

When I took Paxil I felt like dancing on the top of a bar somewhere. I was so wired. Am having similiar reaction to Celexia which I have been on for about 2 months now, 20 mg. I get into the most intense animated and chatty moods. On Zolft, I was so mellowed out and I loved that. It was as though I had backed away from the world but with Celexa, it is as if the world is up against my face and I want to continually confront and challenge it. I would have stayed on the Zoloft but it caused very bad muscle/joint pain which went away once I went off of it. I sometimes consider going off meds altogether but don't anymore because I inevitable sink into a severe depression within weeks. Just got to keeping fighting this horrible illness the best I can until I can't any longer.

Celexa is making me "chatty" too ... and confrontational. But my Dr. thinks it's probably just a result of the depression being lifted, which makes sense to me. I just won't let people push me around (as much.) It could be worse, I suppose.

What seems very eerie to me is that most AD's help with my depression but each seems to magnify one particular part of my personality. With Celexa I am that hypomanic person while on Zoloft I was real cool and chilled out :) Sometimes I feel like I have little or no control over my brain and that on or off drugs, I am a victim to my own chemistry. None of this matters as much as long as I am not in pain, can get out of bed, and drive from point A to point B without tears running down my face. At this stage of the game, I no longer expect to experience "normal", if there is such a thing.

I have been on paxil, prozac and now celexa. On paxil I experienced a few unpleasant side effects like weight gain so I go off. About 6 months later I start crying over everything. Another thing on Paxil if I was a couple hours late in taking my medicine My head would feel buzzy. I hate this feeling. Then I go on prozac which is good at first and then I became so negative. I didn't have any feelings of love or hate. Just nothing. I hated people. I go off and start taking celexa. I take it two months and start the negative thing again. I even hated being around my children most of the time. I have quit taking it for 5 days now and the buzzy feeling is back. Has anyone ever had this side effect . Please let me know.

Celexa is thought to not be as activating as
Prozac nor as sedating as Paxil. All SSRI's
(Prozac, Celexa, Paxil, Zoloft and Luvox)
can disrupt sleep (or, if sleep is battered by
depression, they can improve sleep). Celexa
is said to be less disruptive but each person is
different (and each person reacts to each
SSRI differently). My rule is that if it helps
sleep, take it at night, if it makes it worse,
take it in the morning, and if it is intolerable,
try time or decrease the dose or add another
sleep agent.

I started on Paxil over a year ago, but was only on it for about 2 months - I was sleeping all the time, and I could tell that I was gaining weight.

I took effexor for a long time - that seemed to help my depression, but it made me very edgy. After a while I either got sick of it or it wasn't working, so I'm off that and on Celexa.

There was no interval where I came off of one and on the other. My doc just said to start taking the Celexa. I felt really spaced out and depressed for a couple of days, and then things got a lot better. Celexa helps with my depression, anxiety attacks, and social phobia.

I also have the regular side effects - sexual disfunction, tiredness, air-headed-ness...but the med has been more good than bad.

I did experience some effects whereupon my emotions were cut off. They were more than leveled out - it's like I almost didn't care. I was able to end a pretty intense (but innapropriate) relationship without a lot of emotional pain. I know I felt it, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Lately, though, the effectiveness of this med is beginning to wear off. Now, I can sleep from 5pm to 7am if I want. This is not a good thing! Also, I have a lot of trouble concentrating at work...

If anyone knows how to counter these side effects I would really like to know!

Drew

My psyc dr is talking about adding ritalin to help with airheadedness and inattention. Should find out tomorrow whether he'll want me to add it. Has anyone else added it to celexa? (am taking 40mg at night currently). TIA, Mary

I take Celexa during the day and Trazadone to sleep at night, but I keep waking up in the morning feeling like I have a hangover. Anyone know what I can take to sleep that won't make me feel that way when I wake up?

Woohoo!!! I love Celexa!! I sleep at night, smile during the day, and face life in a positive manner. I sometimes increase my dosage (per Dr.'s rec.) for predictably stressful times. My husband thinks he's married to another woman- a happy one. Diminished libido? Yeah, I've got that, but I don't even notice or care. It's an epidemic at my school ( I teach elementary school) FIVE teachers in my building are now on it and LOVING every minute of it!

When stop taking an anti-Deppresant what happens?

I have been taking Celexa for a month now for the treatment of Panic disorder, Anxiety and deppresion. I have only had these problems for three months, they were casued by over use of medications and drug use. My question if I suddenly stop taking the anti-depresants will I crash and go into a deep depresion hole...If you have any experince with this please write back...

My doctor put me on Prozac for a month, but I didn't like the side effects (sexual), so he put me on Celexa. I was on that a month, with no improvement of symptoms. I just came off of it, abruptly.
I think that is what is to blame for me not being able to sleep now. I've bene off of it for about 2 weeks, and I'm not sleeping. I've also been a little bit lightheaded. Nothing major, and some days are
worse than others. Worse sometimes if I do alot of movement.
That's the worst I have seen with the withdrawal symptoms.
We agreed that hopefully, my depression will go away, and I'll be able to
go for a while without the meds.
