I've occaisionally suffered from insomnia in the past, but most often, my depression, and prozac and other medications lead me to oversleep/hypersomnia. What you describe is difficult to figure because it sounds like you do sleep regularly, for six hours, and so, perhaps it's not insomnia, but, rather, something akin to what I suffered from for years before antidepressants. To me, it seemed to be all about sleep cycles. Studies have shown that humans have an internal clock which makes a day (sleep/wake cycle) about 26 hours on average - longer than an actual day. Theories as to why abound, but to me, the interesting thought is that, given the average is 26 hrs., mustn't it vary, and be quite possible that many people have a longer, say 28, 30 or more hour internal day cycle clock. I don't know, but I felt I did. I'm interested to know if you feel that anxiety prevents sleep, or if it is just that you are not tired. Please clarify. Hope you find a solution.

I have had this, in fact most of my life until I
was treated for dep, I basically could not go
to sleep until 3-4 am and then I would sleep until
something woke me up. In other words, once I got
to sleep, I was out cold, but getting there was
almost impossible. If I would wake up in under
4 hours, I would be super hyper for the day. If
this goes on for several days (as it often does
in the summer) I become clearly hypomanic and
resort to a large dose of benzos to conk myself
out. My mood is usually normal to down after this.

The various AD meds have different effects on
the sleep cycle. The SSRI's seem to cause (in me)
a shortening of the clock as well as a total
inability to sleep more than a few hours. This
comes on within two weeks of starting the med.

The TCA amitriptyline seems to really help me
fall asleep at the right time, so it helps with
keeping a more regular schedule.

I've heard that Nefazadone can induce some serious
sleep and is often used for this along with another
AD.

Good luck in your pursuit of a good night's sleep.

Sean.
