Dr Bob: There is a spammer in our midst

Posted by Joanne on May 23, 1999, at 19:20:36

Dr. Bob and anyone else who hates spam....
I have gotten unsolicited email (spam) from
a person who has posted things here. He has
obviously gotten my email address here...
Everyone, watch out...
I have never worried about putting my email address here before,
in case anyone wanted to talk to me privately without the public
forum... now, I think I will keep it out.

>Thanks--I will do the same. I wondered where
the spam mail was coming from. When I try to
email back to ask to be removed from the
"list" it just bounces back and won't forward
the message to the person who sent it. How
can I get off the spam list? Spamhater

Re: Most email providers will block spam if asked

Most email providers will block spam mail or have
a block sender setup. If not just email your email
provider and have the email address put on a list
that will not let it send to your email address.

James here....

Well, don't do what you just did ! If the address is valid you just told them your addy is active and many spammers "spoof" a fake address so replying to it is pointless.

Outlook Express 5.0 has a great feature that lets you highlight an addy and right click, you then select "block sender" with adds the addy to your personal database of blocked senders.

If you want to mail someone, don't use the user id
of the mail address, use "root" or 'webmaster" as the ID and then the host name. Like root@spammer's_host.com. Send your hate mail there. They will probably say the email addy is not valid (because it is spoffed) but you might catch a novice spammer in the tracks.

Sorry about that, but unfortunately, there's nothing I can do. If you can tell who it is, I can try to block them from posting, but that's about it.

There are advantages and disadvantages to making your email address public. Spam is one of the latter.

There are ways to try to fight it, as mentioned by others already, but me, I just delete it when I get it. It just takes a second, and I'd rather not spend any more time on it than that.

please accept my heartfelt apologies. I got suckered into forwarding an email to about 40 of you and I feel like a complete JERK. It will never happen again. I am very sorry.

Apologies accepted (at least by me). A happy ending, IMO. :-)
