Remeron for OCD?

Posted by Matt on November 28, 1998, at 2:03:36

I've been told by a reliable source that Remeron is showing promise as a drug for OCD. Has anyone had any experience with this drug for OCD, or has anyone heard anything about Remeron's anti-obsessive powers?

Thanks,

Matt

Since Remeron acts to increase Serotonin, and a relative deficiency is involved in OCD, there is no reason Remeron shouldn't work in OCD. I haven't used it yet for that, but will probably get around to it.

Luvox is for many an effective medicine for OCD. However, it doesn't work for everyone. It generally takes at least 10 weeks on the medicine to see real benefit as far as OCD goes. Not knowing the specifics of your case, I don't know how long your daughter has been on Luvox. After 12 or so weeks the doctor may raise the medicine, incrementally, up to 200-300mg for adults (I don't know how one would dose Luvox for a 14 year-old). So, it may be an issue of waiting a while longer, or it may be an issue of upping the dose. The other SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Paxil) also are effective for OCD. Anfranil (a tricyclic) also works for OCD, though it has more side effects than do the SSRIs. It's important that you have a good relationship with your daughter's psychiatrist (assuming that this is the person giving her the medicine); you should be able to go to her/him with these sorts of concerns. If you haven't already talked to her/him, I would do so, and express the concerns you've expressed here.

Good luck,

Matt

yea, i just started taking remeron and i'm wondering if it's effective for OCD. i'v taken paxil and luvox; and i'v reluctantly decided to take remeron due to its claim of less side effects. Does anyone know how safe this drug is in comparison? i havn't found much info on it. other- wise i'm gonna have to go back to paxil cause this is somthing thats bothering me.

What about Remeron for social anxiety? I've been taking Nardil but it has so many side effects. Has anyone on Remeron felt more confident socially?

> what is OCD?

OCD is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in which the subject (yikes, that sounds clinical) has unwanted obsessions, or intrusive thoughts, and compulsions,or where the person acts on these thoughts.....such as the textbook feeling that a catastrophe may occur if one doesn't continously wash his hands, keep germs at bay by cleansliness etc.

I took Mirtazapene (Zispin/Remeron) for chronic depression as a result of social phobia. It's a great antidepressant but unfortunately did nowt for my SP - a shame really as it has a very good side effect profile, provided you don't mind gaining a stone or two!
