can you cope without meds? & another ?

Posted by first day here on May 6, 1999, at 13:52:32

how do you know if you have been properly diagnosed if it takes so long to get better or if you have to try so many diff. meds then maybe I could be being treated for something when it should be something different? how much has therapy helped you? it doesn't seem to help me much, although I am down to once a month visits, it didn't seem to be wonderful help when I was going more frequently either. should I look for someone else? I have been up and down this internet looking for something to answer these and I cannot seem to get any answers on my own. Seems like there is too much to cover in one 45 minute session and I have to pick and choose what I need to talk about and we never seem to get to stuff that takes me awhile to say without having some sort of breakdown. I'm ready to jump off a bridge, please give me some answers.

first day,
You have found a good place for support. I don't have any answers--and no advice--to offer, but I wanted you to know that I read your post. You are doing better than I am because I can't even get myself back into therapy. I never seem to have any problems getting meds, but without any type of structured program I am just self-medicating (lorazepam).

Last month I read several good posts re: finding a good therapist. You might want to look back over the main "threads" for April.

Be kind to yourself,
cait

I read your post and can really empathize with you. I am 26 and have been in and out of therapy for years. I also studied Psych in college and was always aware of taking meds for depression. I am really into health food and don't even take aspirin so I tried therapy, diet, exercise..everything to stop being depressed. My life is actually very intact-education,work, friends, etc. and I always felt like I had this "little secret" that I felt so unhappy all the time. People tend to come to me for advice, and there I was contemplating driving my car of a cliff. I sometimes felt like an actress in the play called "life", pretending to be happy.

Finally, I went to my doctor and told him of my pain. Therapy alone has not helped me and I don't seem to have any fundamental problems with my life (although we can all benefit from therapy). I decided to take the big step of trying Celexa. It's been almost a month and I can't tell you how it's changed my life. There are pros and cons, but I don't ever think of driving my car off a cliff. My life actually seems okay!

Please hang in there. Don't be afraid of meds. Even though I'm on something that is really working, I also plan to go back into therapy to now understand my "new" life in the context of not feeling depressed all the time.

Please don't give up. There is a better way.

Generally speaking, most disorders of the bipolar or schizophrenic kind are brain disorders and talk therapy is usually ineffective...you didn't specify your illness...

First Day, I hear you. I've recently been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. I have not as many problems with the "ups and downs" of the disorder as the panic attacks I have (at any given moment). My nurse practictioner (who does my meds) says I am too "up" and that's why I have the panic attacks. I also can't sleep worth anything...when I get to sleep (eventually) I can't stay asleep. It's hard to do anything or go anywhere by myself anymore. I am taking 875 mgs of Depakote and 1/2 of a .25mg pill of Xanax three times daily. My doc wants me off the Xanax and I am scared of having seizures. I've been on the Xanax since late March. My therapist (whom I have only seen once) recommended a stress and relaxation workbook, which offers good suggestions, but I still seem to be paranoid. I don't know what to do, and frankly, I feel extremely useless in most things. I don't know which way to go, my nurse (drug person) says I am doing much better, but I tell you, when nighttime comes around, and I am alone in my apartment, I get scared, like a kid who wants the lights left on. I hate living like this. I hope you find what you need, and when you do, let the rest of us know so maybe I can get some help too. If anyone else out there knows what I'm talking about, or can help, please do!!

No...I just seem to be paranoid over anything and everything. I wish I could just stop being afraid. And my doc said that the Xanax would cause seizures if I don't get off of it correctly, so I guess I have to trust her. ;-)

Personnally I don't agree with the thought that 'talk therapy is usually ineffective' in the treatment of bipolar disorder. I've turned to my doc for the meds, but it is my therapist who has, and is, getting me through the ups and downs. Talk therapy is also helpful to identify possible triggers and to deal with 'life' issues.

If it weren't for my therapist there is no question that I wouldn't be here typing this.

Take care.

claudeah, I would love to talk with you

Hi, please read my posting on May 27, 1999 about the depressive side of my manic depression. Can talk therapy help with issues that only exist on the down side of your cycle?
Cynthia ,
thanks
