Prozac & Celexa Differances ?

Posted by Christy on May 11, 1999, at 9:21:09

I have been taking Prozac (60ml), for quite some time now. It has made such a differance in my life, as far as the depression, and has saved me & people around me alot of anguish. However,I have discussed with my Dr. the fact that I have No sexual desire!!! And have'nt for quite a long time!!! Also, I've gained probably 40 lbs. since being on it. My Dr. says the weight gain is not the prozac, I disagree!!! And so now at 37, I'm willing to try something differant if it means s sex life again and LOSING some weight!!! Celexa was the next thing my Dr. has suggested. How is it compared to Prozac in those respects ? It would certainly help the marriage, if you know what I mean!!! Thanks for any info..

>>First off, you might consider finding a psychopharmacologist in your area. If you are getting meds from an MD, he seems to be a wee bit out of touch on SSRI's.
I recently switched to Serzone, was on Paxil for 3 years, tried several others and hit a good one for me with Serzone. I have lost 6 pounds in one month and I have a sex drive again. I have also taken Ritalin for several years which worked well with Paxil and Serzone.
If you read many of the posts this month and previous months, there is not much you can do about SSRI weight gain. And your weight gain is from Prozac. You can exercise 3 hours a day and eat tree bark but it just doesn't seem to help.
I put up with sexual difficulties with Paxil before I came to this site and studied a bit. I found several more options you can try.
Good luck, Phil

You're weight gain is definitely from the Prozac. The nerve of some doctors that they can't even admit an obvious side effect of the medicine they've prescribed. I guess a crack in their facade is too much to face up to. Anyway, Prozac can do both things to you (I lost 15 pounds in one month!). It's one giant crapshoot when it comes to meds. You just have to be willing to play the roulette wheel...
Best

I am a 36 year old female and for me personally, Prozac is the
key however as you will note from this site; each med works differently
on each individual. As for the sex drive, I lost it on both Prozac
and Celexa; its no fun but when I am severally depressed, there is no sex
drive anyway - at least on medication I can convince myself sex is
a good idea (hope that makes sense to you!).

Phil-----how did you get your doc to Dx Ritalin? I mean, was it to offset the weight gain effect of the SSRI's? Wouldn't *that* be wonderful!
