Birds of a Feather Syndrome

Posted by Patty Gates on April 28, 1999, at 11:50:52

Maybe I've lost it altogether, but I could have sworn that somewhere along my journey through mental health issues I came across something called, "Birds of a Feather Syndrome." It was when people formed cliques and seemed to sort of feed off of each other's weaknesses, anger, etc. There was reference to the fact that these folks usually had a great disdain for authority. I can't find my papers on it and wondered if anyone else had ever heard of it. May need to be a question for Dr. Bob! Thanks for any info y'all might provide.

Patty,

Nice question. Are you referring to people on this site as a clique of people feeding off each others weakness. That's odd because I personally have received some great input here. I also hope along the way that my posts have helped at least one person.
It FEELS more like community but if some people don't understand, they certainly have the right.
I, by the way, have no problem with authority figures. In some circles I am one.

PS-I think that other mental health professionals or people dealing with serious mental health issues could have read about this syndrome, if it exists. Did you study empathy in your 'journey through mental health issues?

Yes, most do.

Patty,

Gosh, who wants to feel worse?! I have received several responses to my postings that have either provided needed information or simple words of kindness and compassion.

If you can spare the time, go back and read the response submitted by Alex (4/22/99) to my post re: lorazepam (4/19/99).

This site is far better than many others that I have visited. Many people are taking the time to hear AND respond to calls for help.

Birds of a feather do seem to flock together. But isn't that how they survive?

For a depressive, I must be quite a Polyanna. My take on Patty's question was that it had nothing to do with this site or the people who post here. I hope I'm right and that perhaps her interest has more to do with the recent attention to outcasts that band together and wear distinctive clothing to insulate and isolate themselves. Sometimes a question is just a question. I'm not familiar with this syndrome, Patty. Perhaps, it is known by a different name.

Annie,
Good call, perhaps! Much more positive response to Patty's post. And I'm sure we all are wondering what drew those young people together to committ such terrible acts.

Omigosh! Sure didn't see that one coming! Please, please understand that in no way was I referring to you fine folks who gather as comrades in an effort to bring knowledge, comfort and assistance to one another. My message was prompted by the recent tragedy in Colorado, however, I first learned of this "syndrome" back in '95 and so I believe my info would have come from the DSM-III-R. At any rate, was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of this. Please - no offense intended!

No offense taken, Patty! (nom)
