The SSRIs, Serzone, and Effexor can cause hair loss. Don't know about Wellbutrin, but you might try asking on newsgroups, or try an altavista search +Wellbutrin +hair and see what you get.

Best,

Matt

I have seemed to always keep losing my hair. I don't like that side effect at all. My concerns for Wellbutrin is being very light headed and dizzy a normal side effect with Wellbutrin? Also is there weight gain with Wellbutrin also?

> I haven't noticed any hair loss from Welbutrin (and I was on it
for more than a couple of months). As for weight gain,
I had the opposite effect...I lost weight. Part of the reason
I was taken off of it was because I was beginning to lose my
appetite completely (becoming anorexic-like).

I don't know if Welbutrin will affect hair loss more on men than
women...this would be a good question to ask some
pharmacologist.

I haven't had any hair loss, but I have
noticed some other side effects. When
I first went on it, I had decreased
appetite and consequently lost weight,
however once I realized this I just had
to make it a point to eat. I did find
that I was able to eat more in a single
sitting, like I didn't feel as full, so
maybe that's related to weight gain. I
have also been sweating a whole lot.

I was taking wellbutrin SR for help in quitting smoking, by the third day i was feeling terribly anxious and a little out of control, is this normal? my doctor lowered the dose to 75mg but i have been afraid to take it. will the side effects be the same? or did i not give the medication long enough for the side effects to go away.I am very sensitive to all medications, I can't even take cold medicine without having side effects. The same thing happened when i went on paxil.

Those feelings are very common and normal and will dissipate in about 2 weeks. I'd try it again.

I have not experienced hair loss. I do not experience the bad side effects with Wellbutrin that I have with other antidepressants. Wellbutrin makes me feel brighter and more alert. I first began with an older antidepressant, Desirel(?) (I can't remember the name) and it put me in a stupor. I then took Wellbutrin for about 5 years. Wellbutrin made me feel more alert and less lethargic. Even though Wellbutrin caused me no side effects, I decided to try something different. I tried Effexor and Celexa. With Effexor, I experienced extreme nausea and dizziness. I would become so dizzy, that I felt like I had just come off a whirling carnival ride. At one point, I became so ill, I would vomit and could not hardly stand up because of the dizziness. Celexa was not as severe, but I still experienced the dizziness and nausea. I should have stayed with Wellbutrin and I have since gone back to Wellbutrin and the nausea and dizziness have subsided. I believe that we are all different and each antidepressant affects us differently. You have to experiment and try until you find the right one for you. So far I have had the best luck with Wellbutrin. Also consider why you are taking it. My depression is physical, not psychological. I have been diagnosed to have chronic depression and I take antidepressants to regulate my Seratonin level. Without antidepressants, I am extremely lethargic and what I call nonfuntionally tired. I also noticed that when I stopped taking Wellbutrin, I started smoking more cigarettes. Antidepressants are like any other product. You have to shop for the one that works best for you

Patricia -Happy to hear that Wellbutrin works for you. Wellbutrin can often help those whose depressions are characterized by fatigue, apathy, and slowed thinking. This is mainly because it acts on Norepinephrine and Dopamine. It is an classed as an NDRI, Norepinephrine and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor. It does not, however, regulate Seratonin.

Molly was doing really well on wellbutrin sr.....she has ADD and much anxiety. Yesterday she starts breaking out with this rash and terrible itching. So now she is going off of it. Are there any other meds that are similar to wellbutrin that maybe I can suggest to the doc for her? She was still taking her ritalin, but the anxiety was SOOOOOOOO much better. HELP!

Drugs like Wellbutrin: This would be activating drugs. I'd say Moclobemide (a reversible MAO available by prescription from Canada--not a hassel to do really, but your pdoc has to be willing to prescribe it), Parnate (an MAO), amphetamines, Selegiline (an MAO B inhibitor used for Parkinson's generally, but if taken at doses below 15 mg does not have dietary restrictions). Good luck

I was taking 100 mg of Prozac and felt like I was numb to everything going on around me. When I switched to the current cocktail I felt much better.

Wow Snuffy. That seems like a lot.My pdoc says I'm on a max at 150 mg of wellbutrin and 80 mg prozac. I take nortryptaline at bedtime. My pdoc wants to try me on effexor because I've been in a slump lately. I think it's just life's circumstances that have caused the slump Wellbutrin and prozac seemed to work pretty well together. Maybe if I could just up the dose of wellbutrin, that would help. I really don't want to try effexor from what I've heard here on this board. Anyone else taking similar high doses of wellbutrin with prozac?

Not WB and Prozac, but I was on 400mg WB and 30mg Remeron, then 400mg WB and 20mg Celexa with 100mg Neurontin.

Hi, my sister was on Wellbutrin SR for about a week when we noticed her hair was thinning. We did not know she was on the drug until she overdosed on it since it gave her hallucinations and paranoid delusions;she thought she was going insane so she tried to kill herself. Did you know that Wellbutrin SR can give you feelings of depression, guilt, worthlessness, paranoa, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, concentration disturbances. Please research this drug thoroughly on the internet.

I doubt you are alone. I have always had a very thick head of glossy, brown hair (something I was proud of), and within the last year my hair has begun to fall out on the crown, my scalp is slightly pink, and my hair has become less manageable. My WB was upped this past year, and Buspar and Trazodone added to make up the current cocktail. I suspect this is not normal male pattern baldness because my mom has a full head of hair, and this hair loss has been sudden and fairly drastic. I intend to discuss this with my pdoc as going bald is going to make me MORE depressed, not less depressed. I have had terrible sweats and sometimes a rash while on WB also. I've put up with a lot of side effects, I guess and maybe I shouldn't have. WB was one of the only drugs that didn't have sexual side effects (which I will not put up with) which I tried a number of years ago and have been on ever since (varying the accompanying drugs to find a workable combination). My depression is chronic, so this is why I've been on the stuff so long. Since the dosages were upped on my meds I've felt better moodwise to some extent, but the side effects are becoming a liability -- what good is having flattened moods if quality of life suffers? Side effects are a drag.
