... Prozac (poop-out) & Remeron (weight gain)

Posted by Jojo on June 26, 1998, at 13:29:28

Am on Prozac (30mg) and Remeron (30mg). Have gained
30 lbs.!!! and feel low level depression. Combo though
is definitely much better than pre-med days. Read that
w/ Remeron weight gain is inversely proportional to
dose. Am thinking of going off BUT remeron works well
What are my options? Also, feel low level depression w/ meds.
Is this poop-out? Added Buspar 2 days ago. Doc said this
should help w/ anxiety, depression and going off Remeron.
What do you think? Thanks in advance.

From what I hear, Remeron often causes weight gain
and dieting and exercise don't help. I can't think
of anything better than Prozac that might offset
the gain.
I'm confused about something, tho: you say Remeron
works well, but you also say you have low-level
depression. Do you mean it used to work and now it
doesn't work as well?
There are many other antidepressants or augmentation
meds you can try with Prozac. Buspar could help.

> here is some information for you. it is true
that remeron has a paradoxal effect with the
dosages. this means the higher the dose, the
lessening of the side effects. with remeron,
the greater dosage, say 45 mg., will increase
the levels of norepinepherine in your cns part
of your body, which is believed to reduce the
increase in appetite. also the higher doses
are shown to reduce the levels of anxiety at a
greater level. exercising and watching what you
eat, plus the higher dosage, will probably take
care of your concern. also, the weight gain
issue is an initial gain, and then slows down,
where Prozac and the other ssri's have a weight
gain concern after the 4th week of treatment.
does this help?

I have been taking Remeron for 1 week w/ great results. I quit taking Ambien to fall asleep, because the Remeron takes care of this. I am up to 45mg per day. I have no sedative effect and absolutely no weight gain. In fact I have actually lost a couple of pounds. I exercise regularly and feel the best I have in over a year!

>I haven't been doing as well on the Prozac & Remeron combo. Just curious as to when you take the drugs and at what dosage. Currently, I'm taking 10 mgs. of Prozac in the morning and just went up to 45mgs of Remeron all at night. Let me know how much different your protocol is. Do you split up the Remeron into more that one dosage? - some at night & then some in the morning. Maybe I'd do better if I'd take 30mg of Remeron at night and 15mg in the morning or some other schedule. Please let me know what your doing, maybe it'll work for me.

I had same experience (Prozac poop-out) Tried many other meds including augmentation with Remeron and nothing worked for long. Right now I'm trying Zyprexa with Prozac and it's the first thing that seems to really work (so far- 4 weeks)

Prozac had always given me the most complete relief but would never last more than a few months. We tried all sorts of augmentation with only short term results. Then a miracle! See my posting "Naltrexone for SSRI poop out" to see what has changed my life. Best wishes... Wayne

I have read that weight gain on Remeron is actually less with higher doses. Some docs go as high as 90 mg daily with no sedation or increase in appetite.
