Hi, I`m sort of new to this but was hoping someone might have the information I am seeking. Is it possible that by having your generic brand of medication switched you could experience less efficacy? I recently had my generic brand of fluoxetine switched due to low supply available of previous type and have noticed significant decrease in mental well being.....more irritable,impatient,decreased concentration,anger,short fuse...etc.My family doctor feels it could be due to the new type of generic brand having different "fillers" and thus decreasing absorption of drug. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I have since,just recently switched back to original brand and am waiting to see if it makes a difference.

It is my understanding that Prozac is only drand in the states.

I have been on name brand Prozac since 1994, and was within the last 2 months switched to the generic. I have waited this long to ensure that I was really having the symptoms as opposed to just being concerned about them. Within the last two months I have had lower funcitoning level in almost all aspects of my everyday life. I talked with my Doctor and my Therpist, whom have both notice a differnce in my mental health. Now I am having to fight my insurace company because they refuse to pay ANYTHING on name brand, and they will only do so if I have sever drug interactions but not for drug failure.

My understanding is that a generic is considered equivalent if its therapeutic effect is within +- 25% of the brand name. It may be possible that you need your dose adjusted?

actually, the % difference is quite large, check out what Lilly has to say about it:

Lilly says it is 80% to 125% equivalent. That is within +_25%.

Within the 2 months, I was adjust up to double the amount of my "usual" dosage and still had the "side effects"
