NOW I AM ANTI-EFFEXOR

Posted by Debbie on April 27, 1999, at 20:10:57

I only wish to share my experience. I started the thread of wellbutrin + Effexor = 75lb.s and I want to make sure that those of you who wish to try Effexor
to read:
It has been 20 days of tapering off of the Effexor. My last tablet was last Friday. I am still pretty dizzy, but WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!I DID NOT KNOW the hell I was in until now! I can think again!!! I actually remember two seconds ago.
If anyone is considering trying Effexor---PLEASE DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Although I understand that every experience with a drug is different, I wish I did my homework and new this web site at that time. I wasted three years of melloncholy(sp.?) and a plitheria of bazarre side affects (don't forget 75 pounds), comprimising, because I thought it was better than being in a hospital.
I am only on Wellbutrin now. I do not know the outcome because since my diagnosis 7 years ago of severe, chronic depression I have never been off of a ssri.
Maybe I am in denial, thinking I can be like normal people and live a life without the meds eventually.

James here...

Why didn't you switch earler if it was so bad? I give a med a month and if there is some improvement another month to play with the dose. At that point I jump ship and try another rather than be less than well

A large majority of depressives moods are stablized by SSRI's or other meds that effect 5-HT. For those like me that depression is a nor-E
issue there are few meds that effect nor-E. (basically TCA's and Effexor) After 5 years and several TCA's I started getting breakthru depression and it was just luck that effexor came on the market ! There are a number of AD's that slow reuptake of nor-E in the pipeline. Happy day
for people like me.

james,

I have tried a few SSRI's and they have not worked. When I then tried effexor, it worked for a while but then stopped. Could it be that my depression involves the reuptake of Nor-E? Should I try TCA's? What other AD's effect NOr-E?

Dear James:

For someone so knowledgeable about meds, I was disturbed and insulted by your reply, "why didn't you switch earlier if they were that bad?"
The questions implies that:
1) I had a choice at the time, and
2) That I was aware enough to know that any better could exist.
If a person had been blind all their life, how could they understand the color of the sky based on their experience?? I am glad for you that you can be aware enough and able at the time you are in your illness and while the meds aren't working for you, to assess your situation FOR YOURSELF.
My question today and the question more appropriate is why didn't the doctor with whom I shared my experiences with Effexor switch me earlier?
Bye the way, I am happy that Effexor works for you. My only motive in this thread was to share me experience so that someone who had been in my position could relate and perhaps ask their doctor the questions my doctor had failed to answer or act upon.
Oh yea, and out of curiosity are you a doctor?

This is the end of the thread.
