celexa:shaking side affects

Posted by kelli on April 23, 1999, at 13:31:33

This is my first experience with this sort of drug. Only been taking celexa for three days...20mg. I've been reading how several people started at lower doses. I weigh 105...should I be taking less? I've experienced the haziness and floating also some shaking. Has anyone else been kinda shaky? kelli

Hi Kelly -- I haven't noticed any shaking. I urge you, though, to give it a little time. Most of my side effects disappeared after a few weeks ago, and the pay-off has been a much happier, calmer mood. I'd take those side effects any day for the way I am feeling now. No harm, though, in asking your doctor if you should start at a lower dose, i.e. cut the tablets in half. You do sound like a bitty thing at 105 pounds!

James here....

There is not a correlation between weight vs AD in terms of treating depression, though light weights often are more sensitive to meds in general. If you are sensitive to meds then you will want to go with a smaller starting dose.

The effects you mention are common and generally
last until you feel the full effects of the AD or have been on the med for a while (a month) Many SSRI's rev people up for the first few weeks...like you have had to much coffee. This tends to calm down over time (the first few weeks)
You need to give the med a month and then see.

If it were me I would always call the doc and leave a message to let him know what's up. I love my doc's voice mail.... as I have changed meds b4
I always let him know how things are going...good and bad. It's free !

Hi Kelli,

A few comments on your reaction to Celexa.

The shaking sounds a bit unusual. Let you doc know about this immediately. My father started on Celexa and noticed an increase in tremors in his hands, but he has Parkinson's Disease, so the correlation between the Celexa and the tremors is not as clear cut as it is in your situation..

Also, 20 mg supposedly is the normal dose, but in my opinion it is always more prudent to start at a lower dose, like 10 mg, see how you tolerate it, then increase after a week or so.

My dad started at 20 mg, couldn't tolerate it since it made him very sleepy during the day, so the dose was lowered to 10 mg, along with taking it at night and this helped a great deal.

He recently upped it to 15 mg, difficult to do since there is only one strength tablet (20mg), but he feels a little better on 15 than on 10.

So, a lower dose could be a better starting point for you.

Good luck. It seemed to be a good medication from what I hear.

MA
