Celexa and Tricyclics

Posted by Dave on April 14, 1999, at 23:36:54

Has any one been on a combo of celexa (or other SSRI's)
and a tricyclic other than desimipramine?

Dave -- I have taken a variety of SSRI's with
elavil and doxepin. I just changed to celexa from paxil (SSRI poop-out?) I seem to be ok on celexa which I take in AM. I take the elavil in PM for fibromyalgia (standard part of FMS treatment)and doxepin in PM to help deeper stage of sleep. I am very "sensitive" to tricyclics (bad reactions)so I have to start tricyclics very low dosage (2mg) and increase very slowly. Once I'm at dosage, I'm ok. So, I do mix them and so do alot of FMS patients. hope this helps--jane

Thanks for your reply. I have not been able to check the babble for some time so i don't know when you replied so this reply could be rather belated ( and I apologise for that).
I hope you continue to do well on Celexa. I have a question though- what is Elavil? ( I am from Australia and we give different names to the same drugs)
Another question if I may- how do you manage to take such small doses of a particular drug which comes in a set dose- do you cut the tablets up?
thanks for your time,

Dave.

Dave,
Perhaps you're the same Dave from above who asked about Prozac and imipramine. If so you'll see my response about how many SSRI's (celexa also being in this class) lead to an increased blood concentration of tricyclics -- effectively meaning that you may need lower, even much lower, doses. I'm not sure how much celexa does this in comparison to the other SSRIs, but this information is probably floating in cyberspace somewhere. By the way, I believe that Elavil is the brand form of amitryptaline (probably spelled incorrectly)--It's a quite sedating tricyclic with mixed serotonin/norepinephrine effects, a bit like imipramine (but far more sedating apparently).

JIM---thanks for the help--couldn't spell amitryptaline either--so I said "elavil" :-)
Yes, sedating, the case of fibromyalgia (FMS)
the ability to sleep,at all, is a real problem.
And yes, in FMS serotonin levels are decreased--don't know why, so the elavil seems to help serotonin, therefore sleep, therefore pain in FMS.
THAT's as technical as I get. :-) jane

DAVE---small doses achieved in MY case in a very unscientific way (remember I was 'prescribed/allowed' a larger dose. I cut a 10mg into fourths= 2.5mg (more or less) The goal was to sneak up on my body. jane
