Any Success Stories?

Posted by Jr. on April 8, 1999, at 11:44:57

Have been reading alot of the different bbs msg boards.
Was just wondering if anyone has had any long term success
for depression and anxiety? And has anyone ever totally
recovered from depression and panic or anxiety disorder?
I too suffer from depression brought on from severe aniety
attacks yrs back. Just wondering about the prospects of
long term recovery or complete recovery from both.

Thanks,
Jr.

We're all success stories! Because we're hanging in there, working to find the right combo of meds, therapy, lifestyle, etc. that works for us. As for recovery, if you mean "it goes away completely and never comes back," probably not. It looks to me like biologically-based depression, etc. are permanent problems for a lot of us. But if you mean finding a treatment that puts depression in the same category as diabetes or high blood pressure, a problem that can be treated so that it creates minimal or no interference with life, that can be achieved. I'm not fully there yet. I'm still tinkering with meds to find the right combo that works well enough without causing side effects), but I'm a LOT better than I was two years ago--I mean, a huge difference!

That is exactly what i was talking about. As i said
i battle this myself and have for 10 yrs. or so. And
believe me i've tried alot of meds. over that time
frame.
I guess i just wanted to hear that we all of us that
suffer from these illnesses are finding some relief.
Sometimes it is comforting to me to hear that someone
has found what works for them and life has gotten
better for them. Thanks for the reply. Sorry if i posted
this wrong i am rather new to alot of this msg boards.

I enjoy waking up in the mornings now...thats a great success. I was diagnosed with Depression about 2 months ago, what a relief to find out there was something wrong with me. I just thought life was ment to be sad & hopless. Each day i see a little bit more sunshine and i am slowly returning to the person i once was, but had forgotton exsisted. If i have to take meds to help me, so be it. I dont envisage staying on med for the rest of my life, but i am certainly happy i have found them now :)

I feel so lucky to be where I am today. God put some wonderful doctors into my life when I realized I could no longer cope alone with my panic attacks, which had an underlying depression. With their help (talking + medication) I have considered myself successfully treated for the last eight years. I now have the relative luxury of complaining about side effects like fatigue and dry mouth, instead of shaking, crying, and fearing I would kill myself. Knowing that my depression will likely need to be treated for the rest of my life has become a kind of relief; it makes it clear that it is not there because I was "screwed up" or personally responsible in some way. I am able to withstand critics who think it's all "in my head," or insist that I should get off all medication. Moreover, I am able to insist to them that this is as dire and as permanent a condition as heart disease or diabetes...and ask the critics when they last told a diabetic to pull themselves up by their boot straps or quit taking medication.

James here....

I've been on AD's since 1985 and have been very sucessful with treatment. I'm a happy camper 360 days of the year...as long as I take my meds.
