Effexor-not so common side effects.

Does Effexor have any not-so-common side effects, such
as nose bleeds? Should my doctor be notified?

I suppose any drug can have rare sid effects. I think nose bleeds are a rare side effect of effexor. I don't know if it justifies notifying the doctor. I bet it is just a nose bleed; but I must emphasize that I don't know. Good luck.

Thanks I appreciate the input.

Nosebleeds are a pretty common side effect of winter! (Depending where you are, this may not be so relevant.) If the Effexor is drying you out in other ways (some people get dry mouth and constipation, for example), it might be making things worse.

"Mucocutaneous hemorrhage" is listed as a rare side effect of Effexor on the product insert. Tho not with the XR. Rare: < 1/1000. Still, its just a nosebleed, if the mouthful above has included it.
Of course, the probabilit is that some other cause of the nosebleed in question is in operation. Personall I would recemmend a bit of cotton.

I know it's just a nosebleed but, it's starting to happen more oftenly. I would say about 1-2 a day.

Hey Lisa, are you getting other side effects from the Effexor? If so what are they?

It could be that it is drying out your mucous membranes, and that combined with winter weather might be producing these nosebleeds. If you are feeling "dried out," you might try a saline nasal spray.

Please get your blood pressure checked. I have heard that a possible reaction to Effexor is high blood pressure and that might cause a nose bleed.

Yes I am getting other side effects.Sometimes I get tremors so bad that it makes it hard for me to write. I have weird dreams and nightmares.
I get migraines and have difficulty sleeping. I also get leg spasms.

Lisa, I had this, too. For months. I found it impossible to live with as I take classes part time and could not read my own notes from class. Fortunately my prof. could read my essays, I don't know how. Check with your doc. And definately report any other side effects you are having. I found Effexor had too many side effects for me. From what my doc at the time told me Effexor was fairly new. The problems writing are a sign that something is going terribly wrong with cognition in the brain. CHeck your dose, ask your doc. They need to know. My doc seemed utterly surprised that I couldn't write, like it had never happened to anmyone before. I have a new doc with a new plan, tho' it's slow in the process. Good luck!! Shelley

I started taking Effexor about a month ago and am supposed to be taking 2 a day but had to cut back to one a day because it would make so sleepy I couldn't function. However, I too have experienced nose bleeds - I've had 3 since Sunday. I live in Texas, so its not winter weather. I find it interesting that you are getting migraines from it, because my neurologist put me on this as a preventative for my migraines. I've also had the leg spasms - mostly at night - they wake me up. On my overall well-being, I have noticed a big effect - I can't fight with anyone anymore!

I shouldn't have said "winter," given rumors that "it's a dry heat" persistently heard in the Southwest. It could be caused by *dry* weather (feasible in Texaa regardless of the season, isn't it?).

My doctor prescribed Effexor (25 mgs.) for night sweats and hot flashes. My first dosage was my last because my blood pressure shot up to 199/100 even taking 10 mgs of Ziac for my high blood pressure. Check for high blood pressure when you're having those frequent nose bleeds.

I find it hard to believe your doctor prescribed these medications for sweating and hot flashes when the medication can cause these side effects. It is also known to increase blood pressure.

Hope you don't mind my asking a few questions.
1. Was this your G.P. who prescribed Effexor for hot flashes and night sweats?
2. Was this the first medication he/she prescribed for this complaint? (Have you tried HRT or is there a reason (beyond the usual reasons)that some sort of hormone therapy was ruled out? Have you tried herbal remedies, for instance? Is there a history of breast cancer?
3. How old are you, and how long have you been in perimenopause?
4. Did your doctor give you any warning about the serious nature of this drug?
I would seriously consider changing doctors if Effexor was the first line of defense against hot flashes and night sweats, and if these perfectly normal symptoms are not complicated by other fatcors.
I would be extremely interested in your reply.
