Improvements to site

Posted by Dr. Bob on April 3, 1999, at 18:32:32

Hi, everyone,

To put off facing taxes :-) I made a couple changes here.

First, AltaVista offers an amazing (though not of course perfect) free translation service. So I added a link at the top of the main page. Select a language, then click on the Translate button. That should take you to AltaVista. Click on their Translate button, and that should give you the translation. This doesn't work (yet) with frames, and I'm not sure if posting will work, either. I guess we'll know if we start seeing posts in different languages!

Second, I may finally climb on the amazon.com bandwagon. I also added a link at the top of the main page to a Books page with a couple (to start) books. What about a section with recommendations by people here? If you'd like to recommend something, send me an email or post a message here with the title and author and why you like it. If you email me, tell me what name you use here. Then I'll try to add those links.

OK, let me know what you think!

Bob

debe llevarle a AltaVista. Haga clic encendido su traducen el botón,

envíeme un email o fije un mensaje aquí con el título y el autor y
porqué usted tiene gusto de él. Si usted email yo, me dice qué
nombre usted utiliza aquí. Entonces intentaré agregar esas

This is a response to my own post translated into Spanish. Let's see if it works...

Hmm, not bad. I especially like "haga clic"! But if you respond to a translation, your own message can't be responded to. Let me try to fix that...

Yes, of course, good idea! And also KRJ's other books...

Bob

PS: Nice to see you back!

Absolutely! KRJ's books are well researched.

Thanks for the "welcome back",
Nancy

P.S. Another goodie you may enjoy, is a book done by Dr. Nancy Andreasen, called 'The Broken Brain'. You know, the role of neuroanatomy and neurochemistry (or all of neuroscience, if you are interested in it's other realms) in affective disorders, that sort of stuff. It isn't nearly as technical as the graduate research of fetal tissue transplantation into the neostriatum for the treatment of Parkinsonian. So, it is very fast reading material. Besides, I like it when S. Freud is put in his proper place..."out there" somewhere far from reality and hard science. (LOL)

An excellent book that I am reading now is 'Changes That Heal'
by Dr Cloud. Try it! Dr Cloud has written a number of books that are also helpful.
He is a clinical psychologist.

I appreciate your efforts at providing a reading list. I read everything about bipolar disorder and neuroscience that I can get ahold of (now that the ECT has lifted the debilitating depression, I CAN READ).

So, here's another book that may interest you. It's another that discloses the nature of bipolarity as, both, a neurostructural and biochemical anomoly. Never fear. It doesn't contain any crap about the neopsychology revolution other than putting it in its proper receptacle. It's another book that removes the blame and shame so very long associated with manic depression.

title: A Mood Apart
author: Peter C. Whybrow, M.D.
pub: Basic Books/ HarperCollins, 1997

Thank You,
Nancy

I can recommend a book by Stuart Sutherland, an Professor of Psychology, about his manic depression/bipolar affective disorder called 'Breakdown', published by either Oxford or Cambridge University Press. It is disarmingly frank, and although he doesn't emerge from it as terribly likeable, it has a blistering critique of psychoanalysis in it, and a useful, non - jargon laden review of cognitive therapy.

Don't knock the role of supportive, educational and 'coping strategy enhancement' work in the management of manic depression. THIS sort of psychotherapy - and it IS psychotherapy - is invaluable.
