Celexa

Posted by Daisy on April 1, 1999, at 22:03:29

Hello. Just started taking Celexa 8 days ago and am trying to ride out the grogginess during the day. (Am taking 20 mg at bedtime.) Have never taken antidepressants before and am scared that I will not be able to stop taking this . . . but on the other hand, despite the sleepiness I'm already feeling better. Does anyone know if it's hard to go off Celexa? And when is best to take it. BTW, if you are taking this drug do not drink alcohol. I did and vomited all night.

Hi Daisy! I've a newly diagnosed depressed person, and started taking Celexa about 5 weeks ago. For me, the grogginess is still there, but nearly as bad as it was at first. I do find that I yawn a lot! Have you noticed increased sweating? I sweat more, like when I work out in the gym and stuff, and my feet smell like a man's! ha ha I'm glad you're starting to feel better. I am feeling pretty darn good. Feel like I got my life back. Oh -- I take my pill at night, but with my dinner. Good luck to you!

I just found this board and just started Celexa yesterday, so I'm not sure what to expect yet. Years ago, another doctor gave me an anti-depressant that made me feel like a complete zombie. I quit taking it and tried to live with being depressed until this winter it seemed so much worse. I had no side affects after taking it last night except for feeling a little groggy this morning. As I take more, will the side affects increase or will I be lucky enough not to have any more than that? I'm taking 10 mgs. and by the looks of it, that's a low dosage. Your postings are encouraging! And thanks for the tip about not drinking while on it. I'm not a big drinker, but I do like to go out once in awhile and have a few beers. Does this mean that you can never drink again while on Celexa, or can you skip your dosage if you know you're going to imbibe? That doesn't sound right, either...I have a friend on all sorts of panic disorder medications and she drinks quite often with no side affects. (Unless she isn't taking her meds when she goes out.)I have to see my doctor next month, I'm sure I'll have tons of questions...

Pat,

The grogginess I experience varies from day to day, but it has improved slightly since I started 2 weeks ago. As for drinking, definitely check with your physician; I had 1.5 glasses of wine and was really, really ill. Good luck!

I had memory/word-finding difficulties when i first went on my tricyclic, but it went away after a month. try hanging in there. my imaginary theory is that your brain is figuring out the new filing system once the antidepressant boosts your levels. good luck.

Celexa and Alcohol...Dr. Bob?

Posted by maybelle on April 12, 1999, at 1:28:53

In reply to Re: Celexa, posted by Sarah on April 6, 1999, at 0:43:37

I am really concerned by the recent postings about combining alcohol with Celexa. I'm no doctor, but I thought that mixing alcohol with SSRIs (and certain other A.D.s) was a recipe for disaster. I mean like seizures, coma, death, liver disease-type scenarios. Plus, this stuff about not taking meds on nights you want to go drinking sounds like a bad idea. Granted, Celexa supposedly has a faster reaction time, but I believe (?) that it is still necessary to maintain an even dose over time for a theraputic effect.
Because of the helpful nature of this forum, I will not go into the import of not being willing to forgo alcohol after being warned not to combine it with SSRIs; only please discuss the issue with your physician.
Incidentally, all my meds have a bright sticker on them from the pharmacy warning me not to use alcohol. I'm surprised that aparantly all pharmacists don't do this.

I asked my Dr. when I first began Celexa about an alcohol reaction and he said it because of the potential sedating side effects that alcohol may not be a great idea. I have had a few drinks a couple of times and have not had any side effects besides being dehydrated.
