Itchy/scratchy after Effexor?

Posted by anne on April 1, 1999, at 22:59:28

I've been on Effexor XR for 2 months now and feel pretty wonderful, especially since increasing the dose 2 weeks ago. Suddenly, the past 2 days I have started itching all over at bedtime - Oatmeal baths and topical cortisone don't touch it. Could it possibly be the Effexor? I've never heard of being allergic to antidepressants. Will it go away? I am loathe to give this drug up; it took so long to find one that was helpful.

>>Anne,

As my post from last month mentioned, I had exactly the same problem. About the worst itching I've ever had. As soon as I told my psychopharm. he said we need to switch because it won't go away. I was very hopeful for the Effexor but I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole now. If you find a way around it, let me know. Phil

Anne, sorry to say I had the saem problem with
wellbutrin, once i doubled the dose up to 300mg
the itching started, my doc said quit it. so i did
but at that dose it was helping my depression and
smoking. The we tried celexa, that worked too but
i had a different skin related alergic reaction
to it and had to quit it. I told my doc i wanted
to try wellbutrin again at 150mgs, she said fine.
after 3 wks I was still itching, it would come
and go but never completely clearup, like you
toward the end it was most at bedtime(the itching).
I quit the wellbutrin, i think if it did go away
after 3wks, it wont. I dont know what will happen
next, gotta see the doc again, maybe i'll try w/o
an AD for a while. Good Luck to you, sorry I could
not tell you it will go away.
Sincerely
dave

I was on Effexor for 3 months, and felt incredible
changes in my ability to deal with stress and
anxiety (my norpenepherine levels were at a 30%
deficiency prior to my taking Effexor). Due to
the fatigue I experinced while on Effexor, I asked
my doctor during the 3rd month if I could slowly
take myself off the medication, because of the
fatigue and because I felt that the medication had
had its time to help me get my body back up to
par.

I have been completely off Effexor for precisely
one week. Since the day I took myself completely
off Effexor, I noticed profound iching, and it
occurred right before bedtime. I was concerned,
and relieved to hear of the same symptom occuring
with others, not just me.

MY RECOMMENDATION --- BENADRYL (antihistamine)
WORKS WONDERS.

It is my hope that I'll be able to stop using
Benadryl once Effexor is completely out of my
system. Please, if you hear anything else about
this, contace me.
