I have genreally heard the proposition that once you take benzo's, buspar is ineffective. How true is this?

This is often stated. I suspect it's due to the fact that a) benzos generally tend to be more effective for anxiety than is BuSpar and b) benzos work much more quickly than does BuSpar. So, those that have experienced relief with benzos are likely to be less satisfied with what they get from BuSpar.

I don't think it's an issue of BuSpar's chemical effects on the brain being altered by the previous use of benzos or anything. Rather, I think it's an issue of patient perception.

Does Buspar show-up on drug screens?

Nope. BuSpar is basically an antidepressant (of the "atypical"/"mixed-action" sort, like Serzone and Remeron). Drug tests of the sort that you're liable to run across won't test for random drugs like BuSpar. Things they might test for: opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, tricyclics (if it's a test in a hospital), benzos, barbiturates, marijuana.

It is not effective for all types of anxiety, however, something a lot of physicians don't seem to realize.

Have you experienced agitation from Buspar? I've been taking it for three weeks stating at 7.5mg twice a day moving up to 10 mg twice and now 12.5mg am and 7.5 pm. I'm not sure if it's doing anything for the anxiety because I feel agitated most of the day. I don't understand how one of the side effects of a drug for anxiety can be increased agitation or nervousness as it says in the sheet that comes with it. Has anyone been experiencing this and has anyone had to stop Buspar because it caused more anxiety? Thanks.

Jeff,

I think this is unusual, but not impossible, with BuSpar.

I do know that people taking antidepressants (especially SSRIs like Paxil and Prozac) for panic disorder definitely tend to have increased anxiety at first; the way to get around this is starting at a very low dose (e.g., 0.5-1cc (2-4mg) of liquid Prozac, or 5mg of Paxil) and increasing it gradually as tolerated. It also happens with tricyclic antidepressants like imipramine, so people with PD usually need to start those at 10mg or so.
