Sedating effects of Zoloft

Posted by Buffalo on June 22, 1998, at 23:16:28

Hi all- I've been taking Zoloft- 50 mg, qd- for more than a year, for a condition diagnosed as major depression. It seems to me that I am increasingly having trouble with the sedating effect, that is, I have trouble getting through a day without a long nap in the afternoon, and I will sleep for ten or eleven hours a night, if I allow myself to. I've been self medicating with coffee and gensing, which helps a little, but I'm sick of sleeping so much of my time away, and the sleepiness, when it hits, makes it hard to live a normal life, like holding a job, for example. Are there any newer ssri's that address the sedating/sleepiness issue? Please don't suggest St. John's Wort. I tried it for a few weeks, but it couldn't hold the line against the swing into depression when it came. I've got to stay on antidepressants for the time being. Thanks. -B.

Maybe you could ask your doctor about taking it at
bedtime (if you're not already). You're not getting
more depressed, are you?

There are non-SSRI antidepressants that may be less
sedating, but they may be less helpful against your
depression, too...

Prozac and Wellbutrin are definitely more
activating than Zoloft.

What time of the day do you take the zoloft? It made me sleepy when I took it in the morning, but,my doctor said to change to night time. You still get the beneficial effects, and sleep right through the night.

Hi.. First, I would like to thank Dr Bob and all
contributing and helpful people that I have expressed
their expertice to all the questions. I am a male
28 taking 2 25mg Zoloft tablets a day (in the morning)
Although, I have not had much result from it, I
do see some. However, last night, after trying to
be intimate with my girlfriend, I had trouble with
my errection. This bothered me since it was the
first time that something like this has happened
to me. I am still too young to use Viagra. Should
I tell my physician to discontinue the drug since
my mild depression was a result of ADD? Also does
Adderall cause such side-effects? Adderall,
has been a great help for my ADD or ADHD instead
of Ritalin which was very little help. Your response
would be very helpful and appreciated.

i found your response to Zoloft interesting. I have been taking 50 mg's for almost 6 weeks now. i can sleep 16 hours a day if I let myself. If I get 10 hours of sleep , wake up, eat breakfast...I can go right back to sleep. I do take my pill in the morning but I am afraid if I take it at night I would forget to take it regularly. Maybe I will try it.

Thanks,
Italy
