Today I'm starting Celexa. I'm wondering if anyone taking it has noticed weight gain? I've been on Zoloft previously & have gain 20 pounds with it. I wasn't able to tolerate any of the other SSRI's due to adverse side effects. My. Dr. is trying me on Celexa next & I'm hoping to not have the problem with weight gain!!

Hi Erin,
I've been on 8omgs/day Celexa since sometime around early November. Truthfully, I've no side effects other than some dry mouth. No weight gain. Hooray. I still have to lose 50 pounds from being on Lithium and Depakote (both of those drugs should be outlawed! I've never weighed more than 110LBs at 5'4" until I took those damn drugs) Anyone know how to lose that weight? I train really hard and watch my food intake. But, my weight won't budge. I'm at my wits end!

Nancy: The only drugs (out of the masses I've taken) that I've gain weight on were Lithium (BOO!) and Depakote (HISS!).
I've been on Celexa since the begining of November and have not gained a single pound from it! You probably won't have a problem with it either.

I just started Celexa a few weeks ago following about a year on Effexor, with Effexor & Zyprexa preceding that. The reason I switched was because of weight gain, and supposedly that's not a concern with Celexa.
It's been only about three weeks, but everything's okay. I might even have lost a little weight, but I'll keep you posted.
(The only side effect I might have is dry mouth, and even that's negligable.)
I haven't had anxiety or anything, but I am talking a heck of a lot more ... I just go on and on and on. ("I'm not worried as long as it's not nonsense..." my doctor said!) She thinks it's just "normal" effect of a break in the depression, as I've been feeling better on 40 mg of Celexa than I did on 487.5mg of Effexor!

I did'nt have any problems with weight gain. In fact I probably lost a couple of pounds. But Celexa was to sedating for me. I wanted to sleep all the time.

Scott- Celexa is supposedly weight neutral. In the package insert it states that in studies up to 1 year 1kg (or about 1 pound) of weight loss was noted. Also in speaking with some physicians, it appears that sedation may be slight during the first week or so of taking Celexa but typically it goes away. Hope that helps.

I have been on Celexa for a week and I am so tired. I was on Zoloft previously and gained over thirty pounds, has anyone ever been able to lose the weight associated with antideppresant usage?

Iam starting the meds tomorrow. I'd love to hear any feedback associated with the drug. My depressin sometimes is so severe that it actually looks black or cloudy out when its perfectly sunny.

I am currently taking Zoloft, but it seems to have quit working for me. How is Celexa? I am considering asking my doc to try it out on me. What dosages have any of you found to work best? I recently moved from San Francisco to Amsterdam, Holland and it's miserable and rainy here and I'm terribly depressed. Please let me know what your impressions of Celexa are. Also, I'm not worried about sleepiness, I haven't had a decent night's sleep since I moved here 8 months ago.

I don't know if Celexa is approved for OCD, but because it is an SSRI antidepressant, it probably will work for that indication. All of the SSRIs tend to be used interchangeably for OCD, so ask your doc if you think it's right for you. Terry

I've also experienced insomnia occasionally. I've read that some have had problems with sedation, is this the type of thing you were talking about or is it different for you?
Does decreasing the dosage help?

I will be starting on Monday after being on effexor. I've been on prozac, no go, paxil, no go, zoloft, slept all the time, effexor was the best but now does not seem to work, even with a very high dose. I had asked about wellbutrin, she said her other patients did not have much luck. Please post with any info you have. Thanks.

Hi Lis - I've been taking Celexa for 2 weeks now. I think it's an excellent idea to start at a low dose then work up. I started at 20 mg taken in the mornings. I felt pretty zombie-ish the first day but the first 3 days my anxiety vanished. Side effects were nausea, tiredness & dizziness/spaciness. Then I got very sick (which in hindsight I think was the flu) so skipped a day then started taking 10 mg at bedtime. Did that for a few days (no side effects). Then took 15 mg for a few days. Bedtime works for me. It means that when I'm groggy I'm asleep anyway. The only side-effect now seems to be thirstiness during the night sometimes but I'm sleeping soundly. For the last few nights I've been taking 20 mg. No side effects, diminishing anxiety (which is my main problem). I've never taken anti-depressants before and my "depression" is probably "situational". For the past several years I've had major stresses of one form or another, with a few little "islands" of peace in between.
I'm going to be sharing my Celexa experience with a person here named "Brian", so if you see posts from me to "Brian", you might want to read them & post any of your experience/questions, etc. there.

I have been taking Celexa since April 1999 and I find it great. I take 20mg at 5:00pm, therefore I am not tired during the daytime. I am also on Rivotril too.
The reason I am on Celexa is for the same reason as you. I was taking another drug called Tofranil for years and for no reason it stopped working.
I started off on 10mg of Celexa and it was increased to 20mg at bedtime. If I take it in the morning I am tired all day, but when I take it at 5:00pm at about 11:00 I am ready for bed. But that is ok because I should be going to bed by then anyway.
I still have my bad and good days, but the bad days are much more easier. (see bottom regarding a book I have)

P.S. I found this excellent called FROM PANIC TO POWER by Lucinda Bassett. This is an excellent book to read. It ready helps you learn how to deal with anxiety, depression and panic attacks. I have suffered from these problem for about 8 years. So if you can, it would be worth picking up this book.

Diane, I've been on 40mgs. Celexa for 7 months now, as far as "sex", my drive is still quite low, but if I 'force' myself (for hubby's benefit), I do climax pretty well.

I haven't heard anything like this before. I have been on Celexa for over a year. I am being taken off of it now to try something else. I'd be wary if someone said the drug did it. More likely, the needed effect wasn't achieved and the depression won out over the medication.
