Placebo effect in depression

Posted by Glenn on March 25, 1999, at 16:17:50

I am doing research for a seminar involving the placebo effect
and the treatment of depression. Does anyone know of a well conducted
clinical trial comparing either:
placebo vs. patient interaction
placebo vs. active medication
or any combination of the sorts

I would appreciate the help and any comments you may have on the topic.

I personally feel that there is a large impact on the health professional
in either the success of failure of treatment in this disease. Whether or not
medication is used, the interaction between the patient and health care
provider (doctor, pharmacist, nurse) is the most responsible for enhancing
the therapeutic effect of either an active medication or increasing the
placebo effect.

James here.....

In terms of placebo vs. active all AD's go through
a clinical trial where this is used. Try going to the manufacture's site to find these studies.

Recently, there wass a much publicized article in an e-journal. Donald Klein responded. I wish I could remember more, but I think I remember that it was a meta-analysis of many apparently well conducted studies (double blind etc); it concluded that ADs were not much better than placebo; most important--tho not brand new; same happened, at least with anti-psychotics, as I recall--subjects generally knew whether or not they were on the ADs or placebos from the side effects or lack thereof;
Moreover, if people keep trying one AD after another, they might either find something that works or simply remit and attribute it to the the meds they were on when they got better. I started tto glance at Klein's response where he complained about the tendency of e-journals to publish without adequate review. Ill look for it.

Glenn,
I'm not up on the R&D aspect, but as a chemist, I was always VERY aware of the possible mood elevation as a placebo effect. I tend to be somewhat resistant to meds (is that because I won't allow a placebo effect?) so I always found that I was able to keep a positive attitude for my chances of having THIS med work for up to 2 weeks. After that, reality set in and I would just be waiting for the meds to kick in. I wouldn't say that the 2 weeks was a placebo, since I didn't feel any better--that was how long my initial surge of HOPE that it would work would last.
Good luck with your research
Carol
