Celexa and phentermine

Posted by DonaL on March 1, 1999, at 10:49:42

I am on celexa for depression and it is working great, so I guess I should leave well enough alone. But I would now like to lose the weight I gained while I was depressed. Has anyone heard of any contraindications to using PPhentermine with Celexa. Phentermine is the "Phen" part of the old phen-fen diet. Appreciate any input. Thanks

Hello DonaL

Congrat on your celexa working, I am in between
ADs right now and might try to talk my doc out of
giving me any more; I am feeling less depressed
these days but... one never knows really i guess.

I wanted to comment on the diet meds. Please be
very careful. I have a horrible story I could
relate about what happened to my mom that Redux
caused. mitral valve prolaspe, 35days in ICU, it
nearly killed her. I wish you luck in finding
sometime safe and dont mean to give scary accounts,
I just dont want others to be hurt like my mom was.

One final note to All, I really appreciate the community
this list provides. I dont get out like I should,
am a bit of a net junkie. People here are nice and
considerate, the way I wish more of the world was.
I have recently become addicted to IRC (Chat Rooms).
I am very honest and sometimes people there can be very
heartless. I just want to say thanks to this list
for being the kind kind of people that you are.

Sincerely
dave

> Hello DonaL
> Hi DonaL. I am "Dr. Media", and dieting while on any antidepressant can be a very touchy issue. Let me say , however, that phentermine, which has the trade name Ionamin, is a substance closely related to the amphetamines, and as such has a very significant abuse liability.
Also, do not fear the FenPhen problem, as it was the COMBINATION, not the two components of it, that was causing the very regrettable heart problems the public has been fearing for awhile now.
Phentermine can have an additive effect with an antidepressant medication, including a significant rise in blood pressure and difficulty sleeping, etc. Although it is NOT medically unethical to mix these drugs rememeber to ask Dr. to tell you what side effects to watch for.
