tips on stopping effexor starting prozac

Posted by bigbertha on March 4, 1999, at 14:46:19

My doc just switched me from effexor to prozac with
directions to cut back 1 pill per week - I'm taking
three 75mg/day now; and to take one 20mg prozac con-
currently.

Anybody out there with experience in this or even
"horror stories"? I would love to hear from you!

Getting off Effexor can be difficult, for sure. But one thing some pdocs do to help with the side effects of going off an ad is to have the patient take Prozac 20mg for one or two days. The fact that you're already on Prozac 20mg suggests that the transition from Effexor to Prozac should be easier than it would be otherwise.

Thanks Matt

Matt-
I am grateful for your input. I am discovering
that taking Prozac on alternate days while continuing
Effexor seems to be more effective. Perhaps the
Effexor had been headed for the dreaded "poop-out"
and a little bit a prozac goes a long way!

Bertha, I haven't had the experience yet...

I have seen some horror stories associated with getting off effexor. If you do a search on effexor in the internet, you will see them also.

I have been taking 75mg of effexor for about 2 years. It has been very helpful for me up until recently. I am thinking that I have hit the 'poop out' stage that you are suggesting. I wrote to Dr. Bob and asked him whether he would recormmend going up 25 mgs a day (holding that for about 5 days) and seeing when the increase might help. I recently saw an author ('Prozac') on tv, who said that she hit the 'poop out' stage using Prozac several times and had to increase. I'm not crazy about the idea of increasing effexor or anything for that matter, but don't feel that I have any choice.

Have you heard about or experience the 'poop out' stage with effexor before or is this the first time. Why are you getting off?

I know I am not helping you too much with your question. I apologize. I do wish you well. If I come across anything that would be of help, I will pass it along.

One thing 'side effect' that I have noticed is that I am not as sensitive as I used to be, less compassionate, etc. While this is good for a people pleaser like myself, I also feel badly that I have lost some of my emotion and
compassion for others. Did you have any such experience?

Bertha, etc. , I don't remember being anything but releived when I stopped taking Effexor as it was "killing" me. I couldn't write or talk, yet I was somehow content to just exist. After trying other ADs I gave up and went 6 months on klonopin alone, and, finally decided I'd had enough and asked my doc for something for depression. We went back to square one....Prozac, the only SSRI I can tolerate, at get this Bertha, 10 mg every other day. It helps. The edge is gone, I'm okay, and no side effects. I do well on very tiny doses of ADs. "Therapuetic levels" make me "psychotic." Do you really want to trade horror stories? E-mail me. Hope you're transitioning well, Shelley
