Nausea!

Posted by Kimberly on February 9, 1999, at 8:39:48

I have tried many, many anti-depressants
to treat my depression and anxiety.
I've had it for many years. Each doctor
seems to get frustrated when nothing
works. I made a big step for me
and started going to a physciatrist
this fall. Again, nothing works.
I get sick. We tried a Ritalin &
Luvox combination...sick. Now, I'm
trying Klonapin and Neurontin. Still
nauseated, but not quite as bad. Just
terrible mood swings and very irritable.
I keep asking for help...for about
5 or 6 years now, but nothing seems
to help. I also get very bad miagraines
and tension headaches. Any suggestions?

Have you ever tried verapamil as a mood stabilizer/migraine medication? It is a calcium channel blocker used by some clinicians. It is normally used for hypertension (high blood pressure) but has actions not too different from lithium. It is also used for migraines. I have been on it ofr nearly two years with minimal side effects at high doses.

Some people find ginger useful for nausea. While on Depakote I concurrently took Zantac to survive.

For more info. on these search the psychopharm tips. Just some ideas.

Best,

Chris A.

Chris, Thanks so much for responding.
I hope I am doing this correctly.
I have taken Verapamil before...sick just like the rest.
At that time I was taking it for high BP which I also have.
Currently, I am taking Neurontin and Klonapin and have been doing wonderful!
I haven't felt this good in years. After talking with her on the phone yesterday,
she wants me to cut back on Klonapin and eventually discontinue it
due to it's habit forming nature. If I don't take Klonapin and take Neurontin,
I'm sick. Tried it yesterday, just sick all day!
I'm confused as to why if something is finally working for me
I'll have to stop? Any suggestions or know of someone else I can talk to?

Hi Kimberly,

I am on klonopin and risperdal. down to 1/2mg of each a day.
you have do gradulally lower the klonopin does.
probably about about 1/2 to 1/4 mg per decrement.
I have been taking 1/2mg a day for over a week now
and probably will continue at that does for while yet.
Dont try to stop it aburptly, it has withdrawal effects.
Taper yourself off of it slowly. I hope this helps
some.
Sincerely
dave

In reply to Nausea.
First I will tell you that Neurontin, (gabapentin). is only experimental in treatment of Bipolar disorder, as far as I know.
Secondly, the tricyclic antidepressants are older
but amytriptiline has worked wonders for many.
And last, the newer tetracyclic and other unrelated compounds alone or in combination are very effective. Effexor, (venlafaxine) at doses above 200 mg. per day is a very effective
antidepressant by itself.
By the way, get a new Dr., and ask him to try to
not mix those kinds of "exotic" combinations of meds you've described. That alone should cure your nausea!!

Wow,
I finally found other people taking Neurontin. You know, it's been sort of strange the last three days. I just started taking it three days ago. I feel really!!!! spaced out,but completely anxiety free.
I even tried to worry about something and I couldn't, which is a first for me. I decided to write because I was just cleaning and organizing my house, which I never enjoyed before. I am just slightly nauseated, so I know how you feel. Does the
nausea go away, or am I going to be in this dream like state all the time?? Hey, anything is better than being a social phobic.
