Naltrexone for SSRI poop out

Posted by Wayne R. on February 3, 1999, at 18:26:24

I am 51 and have suffered from depression since my teen years. I responed well to most meds but nothing would stick. We tried all kinds of augmentation strategies but nothing would give more than short term relief. I discovered the following in the Psychopharm Tips area and it has changed my life!!

This phenomena of the SSRI "poop out" can usually be reversed by adding 25 mg of naltrexone (marketed in the US as Revia), usually on top of supper to avoid transient nausea. In anywhere from two weeks to five of once daily dosing the SSRI regains the full effect and often is perceived as working better than it did at first. I have done this in over forty cases where this has been most gratifying. At this dose of naltrexone the incidence of side effects is very low, and the improvement is sustained over a period of years. It has been the end of poop out in my practice.

If you are taking pain meds also wouldn't the naltrexone eliminate the effectiveness of pain meds?

I have seen no impact on the relief I get from aspirin, tylenol or ibuprophin. I have read that pain management may be impacted for any med that uses the opiat system, like morphine. I have seen a pain management flow chart on the web showing what to use if the patient is on Naltrexone.
