*Need E N E R G Y and F O C U S

Posted by Jef* on January 11, 1999, at 19:27:02

I have been severely depressed since August '98. I have taken Paxil(40mg) - No Help, Celexa(40mg) - Helped a little but to sedating even augmenting with 20mg Dexadrine. Also it gave me tremors and anxiety. Now I am on Effexor(225mg) - Helps more than the others but I am still having a lot of trouble concentrating, and having enough E N E R G Y to run my business and my life. I am also having terrible memory problems! I can't even remember simple words sometimes. Still having tremor problems and I know I look very Pissed Off all the time. I have to deal with the public all the time, and I don't want to end up going bankrupt because everybody thinks I'm a jerk. I have terrorized my employees, and have even had customers come up and tell me "not to worry, every thing will be OK". Talk gets back to me that I am selling out!, or "Going out of Business". I need something that will not make me appear so anxious!, and angry!, and allows me more patience with my employees.
I am in bad shape but much improved since August! I also need to be able to focus because I am currently seperated from my wife (since Dec '97) and need to come to some decision. My wife wants me back and knows about my problems, but she does'nt want to wait forever! I feel like I would be a poor example and my depression would rub off on her and my three children.
My Doc put me on Pindolol for the tremors and to possibly augment the Effexor. It has helped the tremors but I have had to up the Dexadrine to 25mg-30mg to combat the sedation and am still having trouble sleeping problems.
Need ADVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I manage a large furniture store and can relate to looking pissed. I get wrapped up in my sh*t
and age hour by hour!
Is your doc a psychopharmacologist?
The first thing you said that really jumped out at me was about your family. Maybe they will rub off on you! If you weren't depressed, would you want the family?

What is the dif b/t psychiatrist and pyschopharmacologist?

I want my family. I think my wife is to dependent on me, and constantly gives me a guilt trip. I left because I felt like I never got to do anything I wanted to do, and she always made me feel bad if I didn't do what she wanted. And then she makes me feel bad about the amount of time a spend working to support the family. I work hard and when I come home I would like to relax and not feel like I had to entertain her or feel guilty about not wanting to do what ever she feels like. I miss my kids terribly. I spend as much time with them as possible but it obviously isn't like having dad at home!

Are the tremors due to the Effexor or due to the anxiety? Did the anxiety start before the depression, or after? How long have you been on the Effexor and how long on the Pindolol? Is it correct to say that the depression started well after you separated from your wife? Besides the medication, are you in talk therapy too (I would definitely recommend this since depression and life stress feed off each other)?

If you have only been taking medication since August, none have had a really good chance to work since it can take 4-8 weeks for a response. If you went quickly through the first two and have been on Effexor for a couple of months without relief, then it is time to start looking for ways to augment it. You say the Effexor has helped some... what is better? For the trouble sleeping and the daytime anxiety, some options are trazodone, sinequan, Buspar, Remeron, Serzone or something like ativan, klonopin or restoril (but these last three should only be used for 1-2 weeks). The depression experts feel that Remeron plus Effexor or Serzone plus Effexor are very powerful but safe combinations. However, it is difficult to convince doctors in private practice to use these combinations. Your psychiatrist is hopefully board certified, meaning he should be an expert and should feel comfortable using the "big guns" to combat your depression. If he is not, time to look for another doctor.

Write back with some more details.

I have some of the same feelings. I feel I have no focus and my enery level is zero. I am presently taking Wellbutrin (75mgs.3x day). I have tried taking the combination of Wellbutrin (lower dosage) and Prozac. This didn't change my lack of energy and focus. I believe I get more depressed due to the agravation of no energy. I use to be a high energy person and it is driving me nuts to not care about anything. Does anyone know if Wellbutrin and Celexa can be taken together? I just hope that someday I will find a good combination or my previous state of mind will return (which at this point I don't think will ever happen; this has been going on for about 15 years).

Oops! Sorry about the triple post

Toby can you help with info on this? I briefly ask my doctor about the combination and she said I had to come off of one to take the other. For some reason I don't accept that answer. I think she is tired of dealing with me.

Don't know why you would have to stop Wellbutrin to try Celexa since it is an SSRI like Prozac. Now, you likely would have to stop Prozac for up to 4-6 weeks (depending on your current dose) in order to start Celexa.

I accidently told you wrong on my Wellbutrin dosage. I am taking 2-75mgs. 3x a day for a total of 450mgs per day. When I was taking Prozac with the Wellbutrin, I took 100mgs. Wellbutrin 3x day and 1-20mg Prozac once per day. My body seems to require larger doses of medicine than the average person. Fortunately, I have never had a seizure, nor have I lost weight, had the tremors, or any of the other side effects (I have had a rash on my face)from the Wellbutrin. My doctor said I should be more active taking the Wellbutrin, but I am not. My doctor believes that Wellbutrin is the cure for people that do not respond to Prozac or other antidepressants. I have many years ago taken Sinequan which made me feel like I was in a daze all the time. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much for your response.
