Quit Celexa after 5wks-day 3 on Prozak -Questions-

Posted by Brenda on January 10, 1999, at 0:16:41

Ok - tried Celexa for 5+ weeks. Didn't feel better, actually felt more depressed. Started Prozak three days ago and don't feel any better. Am I going to have to wait the full 5 weeks or so for the Prozak to start working? Should I have continued longer on the Celexa? Why did it not work? Do you think the Prozak will work? Has anybody had any positive results from Prozak? Also, was losing weight on Celexa, now have gained 10 pounds in the past three days - does Prozak put the weight on like Pazil does? If it does - I want to know immediately please. Don't want to get fat! What will the Prozak help with that Celexa won't? Please give me all your ideas and comments. Thank you, Brenda.

My doc says that the trial period for SSRIs should be eight weeks. Good Luck

I answered one of your postings up above, but I just realized (!) that the more recent ones are down here.
I'm sorry the Celexa didn't work for you. The variery of responses different people have to different drugs puzzles me ... For me, Paxil was no good, Wellbutrin made me more depressed (almost ended up in the hospital), Effexor started out okay, then seemed to wear off. Zyprexa adde to the Effexor worked well, but started weight gain & rampant appetite, and gave me Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! (There's no mention of it in any literature... all I know is that it came and went with the Zyprexa!) We kept increasing the dose of Effexor, but over a period of a year I gained a lot of weight. So
now I'm on Celexa and it seems okay.
But I've read all kinds of different results from different people, and all kinds of side effects (or suspected side effects) and it makes me nervous about the whole medication thing... does anyone really know anything, or is it all guesswork?
Good luck getting the Prozac to kick in... I'm no professional, but maybe it'll pick up some of the momentum in pooling Seratonin started by the Celexa.

Hi Brenda. I was always told to try meds for 4-6 weeks before determining whether it was helpful or not. The weight gain could be from the Prozac but could also be a coincidental thing with the depression being the culprit. (I always gain weight when depressed because I don't move as much and I eat a lot of junk foods.) I don't think anybody knows why meds work or don't work. Everyone's chemistry is so different - what is a miracle drug for one person is of no help to another. Unfortunately it's a lot of trial and error. Good luck!
