AAA Pindolol

Posted by Jeff on January 10, 1999, at 12:34:45

I have just started taking Pindolol(5mg) to augment effexor(225mg) for depression. I also take Dexadrine(20mg). I am having trouble sleeping. I am feeling better and the Pindolol does help my anxiety but it seems to ZAP my energy. Would love to hear from others experience.

Maybe you should taper off the DEX

Effexor sometimes causes insomnia. Perhaps you should drop your dosage!

You might need to cut back on the Dexadrine

If you up your Dexadrine dosage maybe the lethargy will go away. Pinidolol does seem to help with tremors.

My doctor had me try pindolol (alone) for a while
for CFS (Chornic Fatigue Syndrome). It didn't
work, but, interestingly, while it made me
tired, it also gave me *insomnia*. Don't know
how common that reaction is, though.

...Just wanted to add, this was not so bad if I
took it in the morning rather than at night.

I've heard Pindolol having a sedating effect but also causing insomnia, but my Phsc Dr says this should not happen.

Pindolol worked great for me at first for tremors at 5mg. I thoought maybe if I go to 10mg it will work even better. But I ended up right where I started feeling anxious and having tremors.

I would stay away from Pin - it made me tired 24 hrs a day and gave no help for my depression!!!!!!!

225mg is not that much effexor - after a period of time the insomnia should improve.

Update - My Doc said I was supposed to be taking 5mg twice a day. I started that and it seems to be working better but I had to up my Dexadrine dose to fight the lethargy.

Pindolol ZAPS my energy too. But the effect of lessening my tremors is worth it.

Beta blockers (propranolol, pindolol, etc.) can cause sleep disturbances, yes, even thought they also tend to make you feel zonked. Some people also have nightmares. Might consider taking a lower dose, if possible.

I've never taken pindolol, although I have used propranolol and atenolol intermittently for tremor and tachycardia. Didn't notice sleep problems, did feel a little tired. (10mg of propranolol, 50 of atenolol.)

Pindolol is a serotonin receptor (5-HT1a) antagonist (another such drug is BuSpar), which might account for its antianxiety effects, as well as its usefulness in boosting antidepressants. I think that Dr. Bob's page has a link to a BTP article on pindolol augmentation of antidepressants; there's also a Psychopharmacology Tips page on this subject (http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/).

Incidentally, I wouldn't mess with the Dexedrine...better to try going down to 2.5mg of pindolol.

What's with the "AAA" thing, BTW? Is somebody having car trouble? :)

My guess is that it was an attempt to get the post to come out on top (alphabetically)...
