Effexor & decreased effect because of other drugs

Posted by Susan on December 15, 1998, at 16:37:20

I Have been on Effexor, for sever depression since July. Prior to that I tried Prozac with no effect. I am currently taking 300 mg per day (up from 225 mg, one week ago). I haven't noticed much difference. I am currently taking several other medications and I am wondering if any of them might cause the Effexor not to be as effective as it could be. I take a Centrum vitamin daily, 1500 mg calcium daily, Norvasc (for high blood pressure) 5 mg daily, Allegra (for allergies) 60 mg daily, and Napralan (for arthritis) 375 mg daily. I just finished a 21 day series of Prilosec (for acid reflux disease) 20 mg daily. This makes me sound like I am on my death bed but I am not. I am 49 years old, and fairly active although I am currently recovering from knee surgery. Any information you can provide is appreciated.

A lot of antihypertensive medications can make depression worse, including Norvasc.

It also might just be that you need a different type of antidepressant than Prozac or Effexor. Wellbutrin, Remeron, or Serzone might be worth trying, as they have some novel effects. A substantial number of people don't respond to the first antidepressant or two that they try.

What dose of Prozac did you get up to, BTW?
