Posted by karen on November 8, 1998, at 18:00:41

My 8yr is dx with adhd, anxiety, dyscalculia and the debate is on if he has aspergers. anyways, the last few days days he has complained of feeling electrical shocks or steak knives stabbing his head!!! it is not often but he does stop and say there it is again. it does'nt seem to be in terrible pain or anything but I am concerned. his Dr is ordering and EEG not sure when but can someone give me any clues? he was on paxil for 1 month for anxiety but it sent him off the wall (5mg)
HELLLPPPPP!!! thank-you very much. oh ya, no seizures at all (so far)

That's a tough one without being able to see him. The EEG will probably be the best help. If he indeed has Asperger's disorder, the shocks may be a manifestation of that illness. Did the start of the shocks have anything to do with the Paxil? Why was he on Paxil? Paxil does't treat adhd or dyscalculia or Asperger's and unless depression was present, probably wouldn't help anxiety. Not much help here, but good luck.

A LITTLE MORE INFO TOBY..WHATYA THINK?

Thanks again Toby, My sons psychiatrist put him on the paxil for his anxiety(pretty severe) 2-3 weeks into the paxil he started complaining of the shocks. Can you recommend something for childhood anxiety/adhd???? I'm at my wits end!!!! he is currently on 55mgs of ritalin. You dont happen to be practicing any where near N.Y.S are you??????
again, any thoughts for an 8 yr with anxiety?
thanks tons

The timing might not fit exactly right in this
case, but "electrical shocks" can be a symptom of
withdrawal from Paxil. See:

In addition to shocks being related to Paxil withdrawal, I have read of one case of shocks associated with being on Zoloft and since Paxil and Zoloft are in the same class, it is conceivable that Paxil could cause the same thing. In the case on Zoloft, it didn't seem to be life or health threatening, just annoying.

The maximum dose of ritalin is about 80 mg per day (the real maximum dose would be dependent on the child's weight). If your son is on the maximum dose for his weight and there are still problems, the other medications for ADHD are dextroamphetamine, cylert and imipramine. The imipramine may be beneficial for the anxiety as well. Two new drugs have been reported as helpful for ADHD: Wellbutrin and Effexor. Although not FDA approved for kids, many child psychiatrists do use them with success and few side effects. The Effexor has recently been shown to be helpful for anxiety so it too may help with both problems.
