Question about anxiety with depression

Posted by Maria Goff on November 5, 1998, at 23:02:33

Hi, I need some advice. I think i have been through the medical wringer the past two years.
This whole thing started out with my quitting smoking and then i started to develop strange symptoms.
Numbness that wouldn't go away, panic attacks, fatigue, and this out of it feeling where I felt detached from things
and this feeling of brain fog. I been diagnosed by everyone who has seen me with GAD, worry, obsessing and mild depression.
I was on Paxil for awhile but the side affects of apathy were intolerable and I was sleeping all the time.
I finally got off of the Paxil, quit smoking, and went to counseling. The counselor said that I had no clinical disorder she
could see except maybe GAD. At this time I was also taking ibuprofen for pain and found that it quieted my anxiety enough that
I actually felt good enough to end therapy. I am and have been under alot of stress also for some time. REcently my anxiety took off again and back came the depression as well.
I tried Zoloft at 25mg for two weeks-the first week was great (placebo effect?) I had more energy and I could think more clearly. But by the second week
it caused me to become depressed all the time. I stopped taking it today and feel like I am right back where I started.
They want me to try Serzone.
My question is-if all of this was caused by stress and trauma, will Serzone and counseling get ridof the problem?
I would like to move on with my life.
There are no people in my family with depression or other mental illnesses
though a couple of people are anxious people.

Maria -

I am not a doctor, but I've had anxiety attacks and depression for a long, long time.

From what I know about Serzone, it is supposed to be effective for anxiety and depression. It is also supposed to be free from some of the nasty side effects of the SSRIs (especially the sexual dysfunction one). It is technically not an SSRI. However, I have seen mixed reviews on it - helps some - doesn't help others (but isn't that true with all these meds YMMV!).

If this doesn't solve it completely, you might want to add a benzodiazepine such as Klonipin for the anxiety - find a doc who will prescribe it - if you get a benzo phobe - find another doctor.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR and I am not trying to diagnose or treat you. I just happen to have the same thing and wanted to let you know what has worked for me. The SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc.) had unbearable side effects for me (Paxil is wicked).

One more thing, my doctor said I could try imiprimine - supposed to be effective on both anxiety and depression - an older TCA (tricyclic antidepressent) which supposedly has just as high a success rate as the SSRIs. This is another possibility.

Hope this helps.
