antidepressants for fatigue

Posted by GGB on November 4, 1998, at 18:54:31

Are there any antidepressants that help fatigue?
I started taking Serzone because I thought depression was causing my severe fatigue.

I was originally taking 300 mg. Serzone, then 150 mg.
and now 75 mg. Actually, I think the Serzone worsened my fatigue.

Any suggestions?

Serzone is usually used for people with anxiety along with depression and can be quite sedating (not the best choice if you are already without energy). Some good choices may be Zoloft, Wellbutrin, or Effexor. Have you been checked out medically to rule out thyroid problems, anemia and other things that may cause fatigue?

I have been checked out medically. I saw my psychiatrist today and he changed my medicine to Celexa, 20 mg. Is this medicine as good as the medicines you mentioned?

Celexa is the newest SSRI to be released in the US. It has been used for a long time in Europe and is the most serotonin selective medication out there. It is related to Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil. It is a good choice for sedated depressions. Has less stomach upset than other meds and some say less sexual side effects.

I've been on 80mgs/day celexa for three and a half weeks. I'm still suffering with severe fatigue, cognitive impairment and inability to experience pleasure at all. It feels as if I'm being weighted down by an invisible force (not in the delusional sense like some voodoo spook). It's very tough to move about even a little bit.
I can't stop the celexa or I'll lose control of suicide impulse again. While on celexa suicidality has gone into remission. It is the only antidepressant (and I've tried every class)that has pulled me back from the edge of total darkness.
I need information and reference material suggesting what next to try...adjunctive antidepressant safe for rapid cyclers, CNS stimulant, ECT, cytomel, acupuncture, Hatian witch doctor, the miricle waters of Betania...?
madness be gone from me,
N.

The short answer is give it more time. Three and a half weeks isn't a full trial yet. The chemicals haven't had a full chance to straighten out. More benefit may be coming.

If the fatigue has been longstanding and you've been inactive for a long time, the current loss of energy may also be due to the inactivity. You may need to start slowly exercising, just walking 10 minutes at a time 2 or 3 times a day will get the circulation going, improve you lung capacity so you don't feel exhausted so quick, and improve oxygen to the brain which needs it now that you've found a medication that is helpful.

Take vitamins, just a good multi should help. Vitamin B complex will also help energy.
