Please, I need advice!!!!!!!!

Posted by Karen on October 6, 1998, at 13:28:22

I'll try not to ramble but be clear at the same time.
Im 34 and have anxiety/depresion my whole life. FYI my 8 yr old is dx with ADHD, Dyscalculia, anxiety disored and now she is thinking even possibly Asperger/NCLD!!
Back to me, Last summer I started "overbreathing" I cannot seem to get a good deep breath. Been the the ER and said its anxiety. Finall after months of this dibiliting(SP) breathing. Oy ya, I cannot tolerate any of the SSRI's)neck jaw rigidity> Although, I emotionally felt great after four days of the effexor I had to stop(37.5mg) The psychiatrist put me on serzone now up to 200mg daily and .05 of zanax. The great news is NOTHING has changed. I called the DR and just doesnt get it> anyway,This symptom of breathing is not only horrible it feels like i'm @#$$$ drowning!!!! He was VERY reluctant to put me on the zanax because my father is an alchololic. I AM NOT, have never abused alchohol or drugs. I've called him 2 times and told him I am still breathing VERY badly every second of my waking hours except when its 10 at night and the whole house is quiet, and thats when he upped the serzone but not the zanax. IM SO DESPERATE I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! Ive tried breathing tecq, walking, hot looooong baths you name it!!! PLEASE ANY ADVICE?

It sounds to me like anxiety is your main problem concerning the breathing. I'm suffering from the same problem after being diagnosed (Finally!) with bipolar disorder and put on Neurontin. I thought it might be a side effect of the medication, but now I'm beginning to believe that it is just the way my anxiety is manifesting itself. I've always found that many antidepressants tend to stimulate my panic disorder. Serzone threw me into a deeper depression, and Effexor made me so intoxicated I could not function.

Maybe you should ask your doctor about increasing the Xanax temporarily until you get through this. I currently take 3mg per day of Klonopin, which I find enormously helpful in controlling my anxiety and panic. I have been suffering from anxiety disorders for over 15 years and am now 32 years old. Benzodiazepines are the only family of drugs that I've found helpful in that respect, but of course, we all respond differently.

I'm sorry. In my last post I didn't realize that your doctor wasn't willing to increase your Xanax. Many doctors are afraid of possible Benzo abuse. If he is that adamant about it, ask him to only give you one weeks amount of the drug at a time so he can monitor exactly how much you're taking. If the anxiety is that bad and he is refusing to work with something that could be of help to you, then I would find a new doctor. This is YOUR therapy - NOT his. You are the one that is suffering and seeking relief. If you have an OK relationshiip with your doctor than speak with again on the subject, and ask him to give you a "trial period" with a benzo. If he sees it's working for you and you're not taking more than the prescribed dosage, maybe he'll have a different outlook. If he doesn't, search for a doctor that will work with you. Communication and respect is absolutely necessary!!

I'm am, of course, not clear about your situation. I will say this, hoping that it 'does' apply to your own 'case' - a good M.D. should do what any M.D. of any sort does - first and foremost STOP THE PAIN!! I find it hard to accept waiting, and waiting, until an SSRI, etc. really begins to take effect. Does your Doc think that you can "wait"? Ease the suffering, and then come to terms with the larger picture. If Xanax is your only 'out' at this time, there is no sufficient excuse that should stand in the way of this relief - first things first...

Unfortunatly, he was doing rounds at the psych. ward. THSI TOTALLY FREAKED ME OUT!!!!!! So there i was surrounded by in-patients walking around like well you can imagine!!!! VERY SCARY!!! Had a good talk with him and AGAIN asked my hub if I were a "closet drinker" again we denied it neither one of us do. I hope he believes us now!!! Anyway, He upped my sezone to 300mg per day and 1 mg pf zanax 3 times a day basically doupled both soooooo we'll see!

I lucked on to this site.. Have been trying to find a reason why I am
always trying to "catch a deep breath". I was on zoloft for 4 yrs for
depression , then was switched to serzone to help restore my sex life.
I take 200 mg/day. Only in the last 3 weeks have I had this breath
problem. I switched to serzone in June. So now you know you are not alone
but I like you felt like "drowning" or suffocating. Even during my workouts on
the treadmill, I often have to stop to try to catch my breath--but find it
very difficult if at all. I will go back to my psychiatrist I have been seeing
for 1 month and ask her about the xanax.

to Mary!

Hi Mary, Is'nt Horrible? My first visit to the psychiatrit. he said to me " I'm not goona bit your head off" because my breathing was so bad
I continued to let him this is an allllll day thing? Have you been complaining to he/him about the difficulty breathing? If its badfor you make sure she understands this!!!!!!!!! Oh ya, does it happen almost all day or just when working out?
any drug/alchohol users in the family? If she hasnt asked yet she probably will then!! Be warned...... Dr. are very afraid of putting patients on zanax/or any benzos/ she may even start you on hydroxizine or buspar....accept it and cruise BUT if it not working call back then call back again It seemed to me it was quiet a battle to got on the zanax UUGGHH!!!!!

I've been keeping up on your posts, and the last thing I think of you is "rude." I know how much frustration you've been feeling with the meds. Responding to me should be the least of your worries. Feel free to e-mail me if you need someone to talk to more frequently.

Lisa
