No help from medications!

Posted by Paula on July 20, 1998, at 23:42:09

I am having a very hard time finding the right kind of medications for my depression. I've been on Zoloft,Serzone, and lots more to many to mention.I am now on Prozac and all I want to do is sleep. The Dr. acts like he doesnt no what else to try. I'm so tried of trying different medications. I have a drug store in my on home. What can I do?

Can you give more details about what your condition is that you're trying to treat, what you've taken for it, how long you've taken, and what dose you've tried?

Paula,

Prozac and Zoloft are in the same family. So is Paxil. If SSRI's are too sedating, (my experience) you must try something else. Do not give up. I have changed doctors a couple of times. There are 160 different medications for depression alone...not counting all of the possible augmentation meds. I call my regimen a cocktail. I take imipramine, effexor and stellazine. 2% of the population who take effexor get a caffiene like effect....I am one of the 2%. Thank god, I slept 12 - 14 hours a day for 2 years. I wasn't sure which was worse, the depression or the cure. Please keep trying. Post your progress, I would like to know how you are doing.

My doctor has combined meds for me, and through this...I'm finally feeling better. I take Effexor and Wellbutrin. I was on Zoloft...it did nothing for me.....I was on Wellbutrin by itself, some improvement.. Finally, this new combination really has helped me. Good luck

If your doctor is not helping go to a different one! Some doctors are not as keen to combine medications as others. I went to 3 doctors before finding one that could help me and that I could work with. Hang in there.

Paula,
I am a social worker for a mental health non-profit company in Missouri. I work with people out in the community that need assistance understanding their illness and learning coping skills related to this. medications are not the only answer. A social worker can asist you in learning how to control your illness symptoms by learning yourself, your stressors and you medications. If you need to talk e-mail me at tstar@hotmail.com

I have been on Serzone for a week. The first night I slept like a baby. Every night thereafter, I have been either up by 3 a.m. or unable to sleep until 2 a.m. My physician suggested that I increase from 100 mg per day to 200 mg per day. I still have not been able to sleep restfully. Also, how long does it take this medication to work on the depression. I feel like the depression is worsening. Help!

Paula - Over three and a half years I tried just about every combination of antidepressants possible. Often there was a good initial response, which faded after a few months. Remeron was the best for me, and it was supplemented by Welbutrin. You may want to find out about ECT. It can be very effective. Try:
http://www.frii.com/~hageseth/index.html for more information on ETC. I am now off all antidepressants. See my follow-up under the question about EMDR and PTSD. Hang in there - there is hope and a better life possible and you deserve it. We all do.

I have to drag myself around but I sleep like a baby at night. I have found a tough therapist I see once a month. Group therapy is good if you find one to fit.And finally, get my mind off DEPRESSION.
