sex life and antidepressants

Posted by anne on September 14, 1998, at 15:04:47

I have been off and on SSRI for the past three years.
I think I would stay on them indefinitely except for
the terrible sexual side effects. I have tried Prozac,
Zoloft and Paxil, and all completely obliterated both
sex drive and ability to have an orgasm.
Prozac helped the most w/ depression.
Tried
Wellbutrin for about a month, didn't notice any
difference.
Am currently off all meds but want to go back on.
If anyone has any personal experience or advice, I
would greatly, greatly appreciate it. I don't want
to start trying random combinations of medications. I
really hate being on meds at all, but it makes a
huge difference in my life.
thanks

Ask your doctor about a new a/d called Celexa.
Its brand new in the US..known as citalopram in Europe. Its supposed to be an effective a/d without the sexual side effects. I have no personal knowledge..I'm on Prozac. For me, the side effect is tolerable. At any rate, I know it isn't for a lot of people.

I had similar side effects on Paxil, the only one of those listed I've tried. Unfortunately, in my case, the lifting of the depression did heighten my sex drive, but it destroyed my ability to have orgasms. I did find some tricks that worked for me, so I had a few orgasms, but not with partners. Joy! The only way I could get off was masturbation. Wow, that's great for depression. I'm on Serzone now, which I haven't been on long enough to know about its effectiveness as an anti-depressant, but I have no trouble reaching orgasm. Might even be easier on it.

For what it's worth, I agree absolutely with you about the cure being worse than the disease with some of the side effects available for us. I hope that helps a little, knowing you're not alone.

You might want to try Remeron (recently approved here in Jul98 I believe). I've heard no sexual sides effects...the only negative thing I have heard is weight gain. However, this seems to come from an increased appetite, not from screwed up metabolism; therefore, if you don't eat any more calories than normal, you shouldn't have a problem. I was on Prozac for 8 years and it wrecked havoc with my orgasms (could have them alone but not with BF :-) ). Like you, I am looking for the epitome of the perfect AD...no depression with zero side effects!! Good luck!
