Prozac and strange dreams

Posted by Susan on September 16, 1998, at 1:16:44

I've been on and off Prozac for years, and now I'm back on it at 20mg. per day. I have had many positive results other than the sweating and strange dreams. I'm running away from things, anxious, scared, seeing violence, seeing everyone I've ever known, and when I wake up in the AM I have to remind myself it was a dream (extremely realistic).

This may seem like a minor side effect to many in comparrison to major depression) but to someone with anxiety like myself, its become an issue. Anyone else with similiar dreams? Advice?

I had wild dreams during my first year or so on Prozac. They were usually colorful..often frantic. It was a bit disrupting to my perspective for the first few months. I had to continually remind myself that it was just a dream.
After awhile, I realized the dreams were harmless. In fact, I'd tease myself wondering what weird adventure awaited me that night.
That was the first year or so. The dreams lessened in frequency and intensity as time passed. I've been on prozac 3+ years...no wild dreams for the past year or so.

Luvox not prozac and strange dreams

I've been on and off luvox over the past year. I too have very vivid an sometimes tense situation dreams. Often, I wake up in the middle of the night from the dreams and realize I am a little sweaty. I too am a very anxious person. Does anyone get any nervousness or agitaion from SSRIs that gets better but comes back say after a cold or after taking another medicine?

REPLY:

When I took Prozac my dreams were so vivid and dramatic, I got up and typed them out on a typewriter. I was very anxious that they were so vivid and close to reality, and I was very shaken.
Also insomnia was a problem for me.

I was advised to stop taking Prozac or to add Lithium with it. Impotence was horrible and I could not get an erection or ejaculate at all while on that medication. My libido was completely gone too.

Paxil and strange dreams

I've experienced very similar dreams since I've started taking Paxil. Extremely vivid and having the same scenarios of being chased (but never caught?) Before SSRIs i in fact never used to remember my dreams, and find them now absolutely fascinating! I find what helps sometimes when I wake up scared is to write everything down on a book I keep by my bedside. This helps put it all in perspective by reading it over once in a while.
Sweet dreams,
Kit

Zoloft. Being chased, trapped, or lost and late for a flight,a surprize exam I haven't studied 4.

The same thing happened to me, years ago. I had
gone off Prozac, and had to go back on. When they
put me back on, not only were my dreams vivid,
they were also violent. (I've since dealt with
some anger in therapy ;) )

The solution: my dose was too high.
Cut back to 10mg/day. It worked for me and the
dreams went away.

I've always been a vivid dreamer, and am now back
to "normal".
