Serzone vs Effexor ? any input ?

Posted by Mrs.Thomas on July 31, 1998, at 5:27:37

Its seems i've tried every drug on the market , with no help. the md came down to 2 that I havent tried. Effexor & Serzone . ( Major Depression is the problem)
anyone have any feedback over which worked better or more importantly quicker. and will they work any different than all the others meds ( i've almost had them all over the years ,& their failures has led to more depression & a stoppage of pills. or should i just go back to st john work & save some money (that made me jittery ) , Proffesional advice would be much appreciated on whivh drug to start. thank you.

No matter which drug you try, adequate dosage and adequate length of treatment are the two most important parts of treatment. Read up on the medications you are put on and find out how high the dosage can go (i.e., Paxil 20 mg per day for 6 weeks and then switching is neither an adequate dose nor an adequate amount of time to see if it will work). Have combinations of antidepressants been tried? Have you had a good physical exam to make sure your blood pressure, blood sugar, thyroid, kidneys and liver, and female hormones are all OK? Do you live in an area where Lyme disease is a possibility? If you are sensitive to the side effects of medications and that has led to early discontinuation of medications, talk to the doctor about putting you on the tiniest possible dose (like 1/4 of a pill, or with Prozac the powder can be dissolved in juice and you can take as little as 2.5 mg per day) and going up on the dose very slowly so your body can get used to it.
Wellbutrin is a unique drug that works on more Dopamine than Serotonin. Wellbutrin plus Effexor or Wellbutrin plus Serzone are unique combos that have been pretty effective for resistant depression.

> Hi, i work with mentally ill patients every day. I had a client that was put on Serzone for depression....he began to have acid reflux, ulcers, high blood pressure problems when all of his life he had been illness free. He threw up every morning, and lastly started having nose bleeds. Now, he is on Effexor and doing great!!
Which would you prefer?
Tammy
