As far as lake woebegone, I see but don't particularly appreciate the analogy. I see valid doubts about this idea. There's no helpfulness in rating posters responses-- nor in fact any particular meaningfulness. What are we going to do then-- get into disagreements about which post is really the most helpful? Where posts seem to take opposite points of view, this seems especially unproductive.

It's one thing on a translation site, where some translations might be incorrect. Even there, I question its value, because often most or several of the translations are correct . But on a psychology website, I assume that all the answers are correct, in some or several respects. Just seems to invite a sense of invidious comparisons being made.

Anyway, it trivializes the ideas being offered for them to be "rated." I don't think ideas can be rated on a scale like that. Nor should they be.

Please don't post anything that could lead others to feel accused or put down.

But please don't take this personally, either, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person, and I'm sorry if this hurts you.

Would anyone be willing to try to show Dr. Bob how he might rephrase the above or to encourage him to apologize? You may have the power to help him avoid being...

I didn't get the joke, then when I got it, I didn't like it. I'm not fond of jokes that are obtuse. As for the rating of posts, what I see as happening is the more articulate people will post, and the rest, like me, will avoid posting. I already feel some intimation at the best of times on the med board. Knowing my post was subject to a rating system kinda horrifies me.

I agree with Dinah..this isn't a forum where you're asking about spark plugs or how to fix your computer..our illnesses are far more complex.

If I read a post on some forum that is rated, say, about computer problems, I know I run the risk I could damage my computer. I would not want the responsibility of rating a post that may appear to be the "best" and "correct" answer, when, in fact, it would be a dangerous and incorrect answer.

I get scared enough reading some posts on the med board, especially with regard to self-medication..let alone have the wrong answer rated highly and someone gets hurt..or worse.

Just my $.01 worth!

No one stepped up to help the poster. I guess no one wanted to take the opportunity to show the poster how re-phrasing with an apology to the posters could help him.

I appreciate your trying to help but it was too little, too late.

Super job of reporting!
Unfortunately, this here ain't no fictional "Lake Wobeher"; we are real people. Weak, bad looking, and below average? So we're being told. Ouch!

I didn't want to upset people. I honestly thought this would be a good idea and that it would help people.

Dr. Bob, can you just forget about this whole idea? I'm sorry I suggested it.

Deneb, I don't think you have anything to apologize for. You believed that you had a good idea and there was a lot of discussion and some of the "discussion" went a bit awry and that was picked up on and "cussed and discussed". :-)

The latter part of this thread had absolutely nothing to do with your ideas. It was about the "Lake W" post. So rest assured that none of this was brought on by you, okay? Erase that idea right out of your head! :-) Pat

p.s. i think your idea sounded like fun but not for a mental health forum...you might try it out on a Yahoo group?

Double ouch, when it wasn't long ago we were told we were "wise, determined, and caring".

(And why wasn't it "Lake Wobehim"?)

Thanks for explaining Fayeroe.

I wish I could understand why people are so upset.

It just seems like everything backfired.

Hi Deneb,

I totally agree with Fayeroe, none of this was your fault. We all post ideas that we think will be helpful, some are used, some not.

This really ended up being about the "Lake" post.
I'm pretty sure noone is upset with you! I wouldn't worry about it anymore :-)

Deneb~~

"I wish I could understand why people are so upset."

I can only speak for myself, Deneb. I definitely would not have posted what Bob did. I am hurt and angered by the post. I never expected this from someone who is not only a M.D. but who also specialized in psychiatry.

Actually, Deneb, this could turn into an opportunity for you to focus more on the population of posters and adjust your expectations of Bob and Babble. There are lots of really good people here, Deneb. Take care, Pat

.Newer version of The Hippocratic Oath

...
I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

Written in 1964 by Louis Lasagna, Academic Dean of the School of Medicine at Tufts University, and used in many medical schools today.

To be entirely fair to Dr Bob, I don't think he meant to insult Babblers. I think he meant those who didn't like the idea were being unduly negative about Babblers. If any incivility was intended it was to us. I prefer to think that Dr Bob was intending something else than incivility.

Of course, I disagree with the underlying point, since if his view of us is so positive, then he considers our contributions helpful.

Which they are, as long as they are well intended. Caring enough to reply is helpful. I thought Dr Bob himself said as much when encouraging us to welcome newcomers or respond to unresponded posts. Which confuses me about his current stance.

There probably isn't any way I can say this without being blocked...........

In my years and years of being here, I've seen very little in the way of humor in administration. I have looked and waited...........no funny bone there that I can see.

I was (and still am) dismayed by his posting what he did. I didn't think it was very funny if he was joking. Of course I would NEVER presume to know what goes on in there.......

I took it up to my level and gave him a PBC. I felt that his post was uncivil because it was upsetting to Babble posters. I feel that if we can be called uncivil for a lot less than that.....the MAN could be uncivil.

For my part, after I realized that how very upset some Babblers were, I went with it. PBCed him, was silly and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Dinah, I wish that one day we could do or say something here and you won't feel the need to come in and explain Bob to us. We 'know' Bob. I mean no ill will with this statement.

I only wish he will have to fend completely for himself at least ONCE before I die.
