Even though I'm "between therapists" at the moment, it was a big AHA! trip for me, too. Extremely empowering and I cannot say how priviledged I feel to know and have met you bunch in person.

It was definitely a big "get out in the world and DO something" moment for me. My therapist was happy about my enthusiasm.

I think the thing that really impressed my therapist is that he says my whole attitude towards relationships seems to have changed. In many subtle things from the content of my dreams and sexual fantasies to the way I communicate. He thinks it has turned me toward connectedness.

Or something like that.

(Ummmm... Not saying the dreams or sexual fantasies are about the Babble birthday party. More a global shift sort of thing.)

My therapist just thought it was interesting, and I did as well. Thought I'd pass it along.

He also says he's learned a lot about online communities and how real the relationships can be from Babble.

Late to this thread, sigh.

I learned that I can be seriously lost in the third largest city and not panic. Came in quite handy the following weekend as well. :)

Note to self: the geographically impaired should not work together to get "unlost".

...takes me back to how I felt when I first moved here over ten years ago... Until then I had only lived in pretty suburban towns, and had last been coming from an environment that was mostly a sprawl of new, generic-looking development... To walk these streets and realize... I. LIVE. HERE.!!!!!!!!!! The sheer exhilaration of the historic buildings, skyscrapers, crisply uniformed doormen at classic hotels and high-rise residences blowing whistles for cabs, ladies walking matching toy dogs in the sleek city parks... So so different from anything I had ever been around before (for more than a few random days on vacation somewhere). And now... I. LIVED. HERE.!!!!!!

LORD how I wish I could recapture that feeling! Now my dreams have long been straying back towards more peaceful surroundings... But noise and commotion and myriad things to look at (even on a dreary Monday afternoon) are in my blood now, so I also fear what too much quiet and a "finite urban horizon" might do to me at this point. When visiting suburbs I love it but after awhile I am also freaked out in some ways... Like that commercial where the guy is running through the streets screaming "Where IS everybody??!!" I may go into shock when it sunk in that... I. LIVE. HERE. INSTEAD. NOW.!!!!!!! ;-)

Hey GG, I forgot you were coming back the next weekend! Hope you got into some good things then too!

So...where does Chicago fall..does it come up soon after #10? Is it third in the U.S.?

To me, it's an interesting list. I would have only guessed a few correctly.

ConfuzyQ, love the new name, btw. I'm glad you love living in the 3rd largest city in the US. (ahem). I loved the excitement, variety, energy, etc. when I was there. But I guess I'm too much of a small town girl to be able to comfortably live there (the horn honking!). But I definitely can see the attraction. I used to live in the downtown area of a smaller city, and it was more exciting than the suburbs.

I did have fun on my return trip. Did the boat tour again with a different docent, so I learned new things. Wandered around, went to a museum, ate great food, etc. I even got a blister again and didn't complain! Tried to ditch my hubby at the train station (well, it WAS an accident!)...had a great time.

Oh, and I got seriously lost again trying to meet up with All Done for lunch. Seriously seriously lost. But alls well that ended well, and we had a great lunch and talk.

Thanks for being a lovely hostess for you lovely city.

HA! You wanna talk blisters!? The Saturday that we were beseiged by the heavens, I had on a pair of flip flops that I had worn all last summer, with no problem from start to finish. But for some reason, they chewed the tops of my feet into hamburger that day and I had to have them wrapped for over a week so they'd heal! AND! I had self-tanner on, which (presumably due to the rain) ended up tanning the white flowers on the cloth straps of the shoes! Beauty tip for the day (Bob and Toph, you listen up too LOL!): I was using Neutrogena brand for the first time; never had that problem with Clinique.

Ok sorry, that's about as un-Admin as it gets!

Anyway!! Glad you and All Done managed to get together again, wish I had remembered. And thanks for your kind words, but in reality I fear "hostess" and my name rarely belong in the same sentence together. First I have to graduate to being consistent enough to even be able to RSVP for things! ;-)

Shall we get the ball rolling on the planning?

Crazy teresa wants to be on the entertainment committee. Teehee, do we need a committee specifically for entertainment? How big is this thing going be? lol

I volunteer to help with whatever planning needs to be done. Wow, this will be real life experience for me!

I think it would be a good idea for people who want to go to privately Babblemail the planning committee what they are willing to spend on activities so that we have a bracket to work with.

Hmmm...would there be a way to maybe raise some money to help out people who can't afford to go and to help out with the site at the same time?

OK, I have an idea.

How about if we have a book raffle? We can feature a book available on Amazon. People who want a chance to win the book will purchase a raffle ticket for, say, $2 USD. Once we raise enough money to cover two times the cost of the book plus shipping, we can select a winner. The extra money will be put into a fund to help out fellow Babblers. :-)

I was thinking that the fund could be used to help out needy Babblers and not just for going to the Babble Party, but I can see how that can turn into a big political mess. :-( Maybe I'm too idealistic...

Lets keep this thread for discussing the party itself. :-)

I vaguely remember that. I can't remember exactly what the issue was. I wonder, though, if we set something up as a group, to help the group, that maybe Dr. Bob administered, if that would be okay?

On another note...Auntie Mel recently had a very cute idea...Dr. Bob Bobblehead dolls. Or would they be Babblehead dolls?

:)

You are right, it seems like it is not allowed to ask money from Babblers.

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/20040830/msgs/384814.html

I think this should be written in the FAQ. I guess it would go under "do not pressure others" but it is not entirely clear.

Sorry about my idea. It was just an idea and I wasn't requesting any money from anyone.

I just wanted to help people out. Would it make a difference if all the money went to the site instead? Probably not...don't want to turn this place into a casino.

I just found some good reasons for this rule.

>But Babble is full of posters in need. Posters that can't afford their daily meds. Posters who are losing their homes. I've often been frustrated at my inability to help more tangibly. But if Dr. Bob allowed appeals for help here, I'd be more frustrated by the overwhelming need and my lack of ability to meet it. I'd be frustrated trying to decide where I should allocate my limited funds. I'd be worried that there would be implicit expectations. If you helped XXX why not YYY. Do you like XXX better? It's a good general rule for the board, and the posters who posted knew the likely result.

Geez I was idealistic...I really need some real life experience.
