med advice please, re: cymbalta

Posted by floatingbridge on December 26, 2010, at 15:13:11

Hi,

Cymbalta is causing some fairly debilitating stomach pain. It does, however help with all over body pain.

I see my options as taking the cymbalta in two doses, decreasing GI distress....

Lyrica? Savella?

(Not sure my pdoc would go the tca
route. When I took flexeril, which is
closely related to one of the tca's, I felt very 'altered'. Not what I'm going for these days.)

Thank you.

FB what is your doseage now? Does it stimulate you? If not could try in two doses? I didn't have the stomach issue on cymbalta. So glad it's helping with body pain!!!! One part fixed!!!!! Love Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,

At 60mgs the pain became pronounced. That's where I'm at. So maybe 2x 30mg. When I look back, there was some distress at 30mg, but w/ all my symptoms, I didn't recognize it. :(

Thanks,

fb

I'm really sorry to hear that. :( What type of pain is it? Stabbing? Dull? I wonder if there is a med you could take to help your stomach?

Phillipa,

One month at 30mgs, then this is four days shy of a month at 60mg.

Spoke to pdoc on the phone, and we'll split the dose for now.

I did have some stomach distress as I look back, but didn't connect the two since I have anxiety. But now it has become unbearable.

So fibro pain isn't keeping me in bed, intense stomach pain is. Yikes.

And not sure cymbalta is helping mood :(

Maxime, I like your new qoute quite a bit.

The pain is upper, kinda' near where the ribs meet. Sometimes I feel it through to my back. I tried to classify the pain and can only think poisoned. Not dull or stabbing or...?

Thanks Maxime. I don't know if I can handle taking a med because I take a med. I know people have to make these decisions, I just hope I'm not there yet.

Do you take it with food or on an empty stomach? I seem to recall my pdoc suggesting taking with food to prevent stomach issues.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with it.

Hi gg,

The package says w/ or w/o. So did my doc, though he suggested probably w/food was best.

I've done both and still have pain, though the amount (always :( ) varies.

Today I took 30mg on empty stomach and seeing if my gluten-free bagel will be enough--but not too much--food.

So far, it looks like I'll only be uncomfortble ;-)

This is such a process! So you tried cymbalta once?

Thanks gg.

I took desipramine for awhile at a low dose it was great on body pain that I get from depression. It didnt help the depression itself much, but it compliments an SSRI well.
my doc suggested effexor and cymbalta when my depression returned but I turned both down due to worries about dependence and affording it if I ever lost insurance.
desipramine is easy to quit and its cheap as dirt if you are tight on money.

Are you sure the pain is due to the cymbalta. A pain in the upper quadrant that refers to the back could be pancreatic or kidneys. You might want to consult your GP.

Hey, that what I said in a Babble Mail. Although I didn't get as specific. ;)

Great minds and all that.

Creepy,

Are you still depressed? If so, did you find an seretonin add-on?

I'm trying to think of an snri that's gone generic. Wellbutrin has. (Not an snri, though.) I imagine you've tried that.

Best thoughts,

My pdoc wants me to go, but did not lay out the reasons as you did. Thank you. That is great information.

Today I split my dosage 30mg 2x per day. There was mild discomfort in the morning, and that's it. So...maybe...fingers crossed. It has cut fibro pain by 75% I guess. That's difficult to give up.

Not sure about mood. I'll have to see.

Thanks for your response and thanks to all the other thread contributors too.

Yes, he knows. Today's morning dose of 30mg didn't feel so good.

I see him Friday. He was wondering if I needed to go to a doctor, too. It's just that when I go, I get told everything is fine, it's depression. Gets old.

Thanks, Phillipa.

FB I know but what does your regular doc base this on has he done bloodwork? Ultrasound? MRI? Urinealysis? sp? Maybe if he hasn't done tests you could insist? Explain exactly what this pain and exact location is, when does it occurr before after eating. How many hours? After the cymbalta? You know where I am. You know women have referred pain from other organs also. I've been through this a lot with docs I have. Phillipa

Yes. Thanks for remembering, Maxime :)

Well, my doc is concerned. He acts at conservative speed, so he suggested I take my dose later in the day, either all at once or split.

The topic of gastritis came up. Well, I took enough Latin to know what the word means, but not the actual illnesses. I started crying (only a tiny bit) because I am tired of going to doctors and being told nothing is wrong.

So today, it's 1:00, and I haven't taken any. I did eat my oatmeal w/ goatmilk and still have a (milder) upset stomach.

So I'm not looking forward to my cymbalta dose. Maybe I do have gastritis
--after meds, anxiety, and depression, why not?

I can call him any time, and he re-emphasized that.

The little I've read about gastritis said what Emmanuel said--that it can refer to the back. (Not that s/he referred to gastritis.)

Thanks for asking, Maxime. I've been wondering how your add-on is working....

Wooh just thought if upper right side to back could be gallbladder? I once thought I had it also but an U/S said no. I was working at the hospital they sent me right downstairs for one. No meds at the time other than low dose benzos. Or it just could be anxiety. Phillipa
