I only sell stuff casually, but I buy too much. Presentation is enormously important. A good camera, especially one that captures colors richly and accurately is key. As is a good photo editor to do effective cropping and alignment. It's not necessarily the camera that takes the best pictures in all conditions. I use the old digital camera I gave my son, because for this purpose, it works better.
There's nothing more offputting than having to squint and twist your head. And a well presented item tends to give the impression, however mistaken, of being better made and better maintained.
That's the sum of my knowledge from the buyer's side. :)
I hate to comment on the fear part, because I usually let fear rule me, not vice versa.
