Sell me a car, but don't lie to me!

Posted by Happyflower 1 :-) on September 4, 2007, at 21:41:25

Tonight we went to buy an extra car for my DH, a cheap on for around 1500 at a car dealer. My DH got this referred to this guy by someone who he manages at work. Well I used to sell cars a long time ago, and was trained by a guy from New Jersey! I did very well, made a lot to money, but my conscious got the best of me,and I hated the hours, so I quit.

Well tonight we drive 30mins out of town to check out this 93 Lincoln Contenental. The body looked great and it handled very well as my DH driving around town. But as the guy was pointing out how clean the interior was, I was asking, how many miles! gulp! 185,000!!! I am wow, that is a lot of miles.

Well it was my turn, and I say to the guy we need to get this car over 50. He started to say well I know a road, but it isn't level so the car will pull a little bit. I say well we are near the toll road, that is really flat. LOL Well we dropped him off at the dealers and we took it for a spin. Well when we got over 55 mph, it started to shake like a washing machine on high spin. Then a warning light came on later.

I tell my DH there is something major wrong with this car, that is why he discouraged saying there was a lot of traffic to get to the toll road,, etc. Well we looked up what the warning light meant. It could have meant a lot of minor things, but it also could be the cooling system or the engine itself.

Well I said we are not buying this car tonight, we should get it checked out, and then we can come back with a fair price. The repairs could have been major bucks. Well by the time we got back I am looking out the hood and I see heat fumes coming out. So I get out and feel the hood and it is HOT!

Well by then the sales guy comes out and my DH tells him the problems and he came up with some lame excuses for everything. I said well how about you let me have my mechanic check it out tomorrow. He said well I could let you do that, but I don't have room in the price to fix anything on it. He kept saying that his guy could look at it tomorrow too. I said, what do you mean you have no room to work with? He got flustered by that! THe trade in value is only worth 300 bucks, and thats a lot to work with.

Then he said they gave more than that in the trade in, I said well it all depends on the deal you made with him with his newer car. I said I am sure you made money on one part of the deal, or you wouldn't have stayed in business for long, making no profit. lol I said you should never say you have NO room to work with, maybe not much, but never be so black and white like that.

He said well if there is something major wrong with the car, they can junk it for 300 bucks. Then I said, it is okay to junk it for 300 bucks, but yet you have no room to work with on the price from 1650? LOL He was flustered, but I didn't care, he was lying and he treated me like a dumb women who only cares about the color and if the radio works. He finally figured it out I knew what I was talking about, he was screwed because he lied, and I saw right through it.

We should have left right then, but my DH asked if he had anything else. Well he had us come into his office to check and the sales manager came for a shot at me.lol, okay bring in the big guns! lol Well he told me that there was little to work with, and I said but your guy said there was NO room. I told his sales manager he lost the deal before we even got started. I told him where I used to work, and he is wow, they are brutal place. I said we were trained to never tell anyone a deal can't be made. Geeze! There is always room somewhere to deal. BUt I have a feeling that they knew there were major problems with the car, so they knew I would find out.

They will find some sucker to buy the car, it looked beautiful. Even my DH said he wouldn't have taken it on the highway and would probably bought it. He doesn't know much about cars at all.
This is where experience can really help and my psychology classes . We talked in class about how to tell if someone is lying, most people you can tell. Well this guy was trying to be smooth, but he was lying through his teeth and I knew it. LOL I told the manager that if he doesn't have any room to deal, then I am leaving. Thank you for you time. We left! lol I bet he calls my DH at work so he doesn't have to talk to me! lol
