Pomegranates

Posted by Llurpsie_Noodle on February 5, 2007, at 13:03:25

My favorite winter fruit is the lovely pomegranate.

Many believe that this fruit was actually the "apple" in Eve's hand.

Historically associated with fertility, although I remember hearing that a mixture of seeds and such was an ancient remedy for that affliction of unwanted pregnancy.

Here's how to enjoy your pomegranate

select one that has a bright color (not brown) and firm flesh- no mushy spots. Pick one that seems heavy. These will have the juiciest, ripest seeds.

To open your treasure chest of garnets, a trick I learned from a Portuguese friend:

thin slice off the top and bottom (i.e. cut the stem off) Now score the skin (cut into it a bit, but not too muc) along the prime meridian and the international dateline of the pomegranate (in quarters, or every 6 time zones or something like that. Now place your knife in one of the lines that creates the criss cross at the north pole (the stem end) and give it a little twist- like you're splitting a melon or something. you can twist clockwise or counter clockwise, depending on your mood and your cerebral laterality. As a right handed anxious depressive, I find best results if I twist clock-wise.

Now the pomegranate is in two parts and little garnets are spilling every where! Use the other score-lines to separate it into quarters.

Then flick the little garnets out using your fingers and either eat them immediately (sharing NOT allowed- get you OWN pomegranate, buddy) or play a mean trick and save the "seeds" for yourself and give the violently bitter pithy bits to your significant other- here sweety- here's the fruit, I took out the seeds for you and everything!

Pomegranate punch- a non alcoholic treat for festivities.

equal parts pomegranate juice and some other juice (I used minute maid berry punch)

low cal = pomegranate and seltzer or diet ginger ale, diet 7 up etc.

then add a few squeezes of lime or lemon juice, even orange juice.

My fancy party version has diced strawberries and a whole pomegranate's worth of seeds. That's a labor of LOVE, folks!

you can save some seeds and put them on the side next to lime slices and orange twists at your next cocktail party. people will think you're so fancy.

'cause you are.

goes well with everything from geodon to cheezepuffs to dried squid to goat cheese and scandanavian smoked salmon crepes.

yeah.

p.s. folks (there's ALWAYS a p.s.) I'm in bad med change right now. trying really hard. Sorry I can't keep up with you all. I'm feeling a bit better some days, and some days not so better. If you miss me lots you can read my post on withdrawal ('cause you're having llurpsie withdrawal) or psychology. or just take a breezy stroll down the archives. just don't tell me what you find. I HATE reading my old stuff!!
